VanEck Merk Gold ETF (shares trade as OUNZ) is not an operating business. It is a trust that holds physical gold bullion, held by JPMorgan Chase Bank N.A.'s London branch as custodian, and each share is a claim on a slice of that gold. The trust's only recurring expense is a sponsor fee of 0.25% of net assets per year. It has no revenue, no cash flow from operations and no way to grow its own earnings. Its yearly net investment loss, which is simply that fee, has been $0.04 to $0.09 per share over the last five fiscal years, and the trust's cash flows are therefore slightly negative in every year. Because of that, a discounted cash flow model has nothing to discount: gold pays no interest or dividend, and we cannot name a driver, contract or record that would make it earn anything. What the shares are worth is what the gold behind them is worth. At January 31, 2026, the trust held net assets of $2.90 billion across 62,358,853 shares, or $46.56 per share, against $27.01 a year earlier. We use the January 31, 2026 figure from the annual report as the base case and hold it flat, since we cannot support a forecast of gold's price from anything in the business itself. The trust's annual total returns at net asset value over the last five fiscal years were 72.38%, 37.18%, 5.58%, 6.88% and negative 3.91%, which shows how much of the result comes from the gold price alone. Bear case: $27.01 per share, the level of net assets per share one year earlier. The record shows this holding is exposed to large swings in the gold price, and the last year's gain of 72% is large enough that giving back a substantial part of it is a fair worst-case marker. Base case: $46.56 per share, the reported net asset value. Bull case: also $46.56. There is no named, evidenced source of additional value; further gains would depend entirely on a higher gold price, which is outside the business, so we do not credit them. The 0.25% annual fee slowly reduces the gold each share represents and is not offset by any income. The margin-of-safety price of $23.00 is set below even the bear case. A holding that produces no income and cannot grow earnings can only deliver a 20% yearly return if the gold price rises sharply, so the margin-of-safety price sits at a considerable discount to the lower end of its recent range. The value could be wrong in either direction if gold moves; the trust adds only a small fee drag. The most recent annual report we relied on covers the year ended January 31, 2026, and the shares' current net asset value may differ from the figures above.
