abrdn Gold ETF Trust (SGOL) stock intrinsic value fair value estimate & owner earnings analysis

Margin of safety$0.00 ComplexitySimple Updated
abrdn Gold ETF Trust (SGOL) is a passive trust that holds physical gold bars and nothing else. It has no operations, no revenue and no earnings to forecast. Its only income is zero, and its only cost is a sponsor fee of 0.17% a year, paid by selling small amounts of gold. Each share is a fixed claim on a shrinking slice of an ounce of gold. Because it produces no owner earnings, a discounted cash flow does not apply. The shares are worth what the gold behind them is worth, and we value them at reported net asset value: $38.34 per share at June 30, 2026 (net assets of about $6.74 billion), from the latest quarterly filing. That figure was $41.06 at December 31, 2025 and $24.92 at December 31, 2024. The changes reflect the gold price alone, less the annual fee. We use the same figure for the bear, base and bull cases. We cannot name a business driver that would move it; the value moves only with the price of gold, which we do not forecast. Nothing in the filings shows debt, leverage or a going-concern issue. The main ways this could be wrong are that the gold price is volatile, and that holding gold pays no income while the fee steadily erodes the gold per share. Under our approach the margin-of-safety price is nil: an asset that earns no return of its own cannot be expected to deliver a 20% annual return from the business itself, so no margin-of-safety price above zero is set.
