Orchid Island Capital is an externally managed mortgage REIT. It borrows short-term through repurchase agreements (typically 30 days or less) to buy residential mortgage-backed securities guaranteed by U.S. government-backed agencies, and hedges the interest-rate risk. It earns the spread between what the securities pay and what the borrowing costs. It is managed by Bimini Advisors under a management agreement renewed through February 20, 2027; the manager was paid $16.6 million in fees and overhead in 2025. The company says it generally expects its borrowings to stay below 12 times equity. How we measured earnings. We started from cash generated by operations, removed swings in interest receivable and payable, and subtracted stock compensation. There is no meaningful capital spending. On that basis, owner earnings per share were about $4.48 (2020), $4.31 (2021), $7.28 (2022), $0.25 (2023), $1.08 (2024) and $0.97 (2025), with share counts adjusted for the 1-for-5 reverse split of August 30, 2022. 2022 is excluded because a net loss of $258 million coincided with very large derivative and securities settlement flows in operating cash. We anchor on 2023 to 2025 (median about $0.97), because the company now has a far larger capital base than before, and its shares outstanding rose from about 82.6 million to 182.0 million during 2025. The first half of 2026 (operating cash of $130 million on roughly 195 million average shares) annualizes to about $1.18 per share, which is consistent with, not a reason to raise, that level. An important judgement. Operating cash flow adds back realized losses on securities ($6.3 million in 2025, $22.6 million in 2023) and does not charge the slow loss of premium paid on mortgage bonds as they are repaid. We did not lower the earnings level for this. Instead we treat the portfolio as a wasting asset and let per-share earnings shrink over time in every case. The record supports that: book value per share fell more than 15% in the third quarter of 2023 alone, and equity per share moved from about $8.09 at the end of 2024 to about $7.54 at the end of 2025 even as dividends of $1.44 per share were paid. Dividends declared in 2025 ($190.9 million) exceeded operating cash for the year, so part of the payout has been funded by capital. Growth reconciliation. Owner earnings per share fell about 10% in 2025 (from $1.08 to $0.97). Our base case starts with a 6% decline, which is milder than the latest year. The dated reason is that the 100 million shares issued during 2025 were outstanding only part of the year, so 2025 per-share figures understate a full year on the larger capital base; the first half of 2026 annualizes to about $1.18. We credit no growth from further share issuance, wider spreads or new strategies, because none of that is secured. Base case, about $7.6 per share. Owner earnings of about $0.97 per share that shrink 6% a year, reflecting the demonstrated erosion of book value per share, discounted at 6%. We do not assume the shrinkage stops, so the stream simply fades. Bear case, about $2.9 per share. Earnings settle near $0.60 per share, between the 2023 trough ($0.25) and the 2024 to 2025 level, and shrink 12% a year. This mirrors the 2020 to 2025 period, when equity per share fell far faster than in the base case. Leverage of up to 12 times equity on 30-day funding, and the manager's fee, are the named pressures. Balance-sheet debt is not deducted separately; it is reflected in this weaker earnings path. Bull case, about $11.9 per share. Earnings of about $1.10 per share, consistent with the first half of 2026, shrinking only 3% a year, meaning the book-value erosion seen recently is roughly halved. What would make this wrong. If book value per share stabilizes for several years, all three cases are too low. If the sharp declines seen in 2022 and 2023 recur, the bear case is too high. The margin-of-safety price sits well below the base case because the earnings are leveraged, the manager is paid regardless of results, and per-share value has fallen substantially over the last several years.
