Nature's Sunshine Products, founded in Utah in 1972, makes herbal and nutritional supplements, most of them in its own plant in Spanish Fork, Utah, and sells them through independent consultants, its Synergy WorldWide brand and, more and more, through its own websites and subscription programs. 2025 sales were $480.1 million: Asia $221.8 million (Taiwan about $67 million, followed by Japan, South Korea and China at about $41 million), North America $143.6 million (the United States about $133 million), Europe $93.1 million (including Russia, Ukraine and the other former Soviet states, which were 12.2% of company sales in 2023) and Latin America and Other $21.6 million. About 72% of sales are booked outside the United States, so a strong dollar shrinks reported results. In December 2025 the company bought out its Chinese partner, Fosun, in the Hong Kong and Shanghai joint ventures for $7.0 million ($6.0 million paid, $1.0 million due December 17, 2027), so the China business is now wholly owned. How we measure earnings. We start from operating cash flow, remove swings in working capital, subtract stock compensation as a real cost, and subtract the capital spending needed to keep the business running (it spends about 1.8% of sales on equipment and software, almost all of it maintenance). Three adjustments mattered: a $22.8 million working-capital build in 2022 (mostly inventory) and a $17.1 million release in 2023 were treated as timing, not earnings; non-cash tax items were excluded (a $14.1 million tax-reform charge in 2017 and an $8.1 million tax benefit in 2023); and non-cash currency gains and losses were excluded (a $4.5 million gain in 2025). On that basis owner earnings per share were: 2016 -$0.27, 2017 $0.17, 2018 $0.07, 2019 $0.89, 2020 $1.03, 2021 $1.64, 2022 $0.62, 2023 $0.41, 2024 $0.65, 2025 $1.16. The record is volatile, which is the single most important fact about this business. The starting level. We use the middle of 2019 to 2025, about $0.90 per share (about $16.5 million a year, including the share that used to belong to Fosun and is now owned). Those seven years contain both the pandemic surge of 2020 to 2021 and the slump of 2022 to 2024 (inflation, a strong dollar, the war in Ukraine), so they cover a full cycle. 2016 to 2018 are left out of the level because they captured a business in the middle of a costly systems overhaul, restructuring and start-up losses in China, but they are used in the bear case as a real example of how bad things have been. The company has no borrowings, and interest paid is under $0.6 million a year, so the earnings before and after lenders are almost identical. Recent results. In the first half of 2026 sales rose 5.2% to $239.9 million and operating income rose to $15.0 million from $10.4 million on a higher gross margin (73.7% in the second quarter). Operating cash flow was negative $1.0 million because receivables rose $5.5 million, inventory rose $4.4 million and accrued liabilities fell $8.4 million after building in 2025; we treat that as timing. Taiwan, the largest foreign market, is shrinking (down 7.5% in local currency in 2025), and second-quarter net income fell on currency losses. Japan grew 26% in local currency in 2025. Base case: earnings start at $0.90 per share and grow 2% a year to about $1.10 in year 10, then hold flat. Owner earnings grew about 80% in 2025 as they recovered from a weak 2024; we assume only 2% in year 1 because 2025 was a rebound, not a new trend. The 2% is about half the 4.0% a year that sales actually grew from 2015 ($324.7 million) to 2025 ($480.1 million) through a strong-dollar period, a pandemic and a war. Holding earnings flat after year 10 rests on 54 years of continuous operation, its own manufacturing and sales spread across dozens of countries. The business is worth about $17.54 per share (about $322 million). It owes nothing and holds $82.5 million of cash at June 30, 2026. After setting aside $25 million to run operations in dozens of countries (some of it in China, where cash is hard to move out) and the $1.0 million still owed to Fosun, about $56.5 million, or $3.08 per share, is surplus. Base value: about $20.62 per share. Bear case: a downturn like the company's own 2016 to 2018 (when, after the strong dollar of 2015, owner earnings sat between -$0.27 and $0.17 per share for three years) takes earnings to $0.10 per share for two years and $0.40 in the third. They then recover only to $0.55, below the 2022 to 2024 average of about $0.62, which allows for losing much of the Russian and former Soviet business to sanctions (the company has an open voluntary disclosure with the US Treasury's sanctions office about past export issues, which it says involved less than 1% of sales). After year 10 earnings fall 3% a year, as other direct sellers have shrunk. The business is worth about $6.41 per share (about $118 million). With no debt and $3.08 of surplus cash, the bear value is about $9.49. A company with no borrowings can easily get through this case. Bull case: 2025's $1.22 per share (including the former Fosun share, now owned) is the new normal, supported by cost of sales falling to 27.6% of sales and sales incentives to 30.1% in 2025, and by first-half 2026 operating income rising 44%. Earnings grow 4% a year, the rate sales have actually grown over the past decade, reaching about $1.81 in year 10, then hold flat. The business is worth about $27.81 per share (about $510 million); with $3.08 of surplus cash the bull value is about $30.89. What was left out: Japan's recent 26% growth, China's new subscription program and the US digital push are real but not proven over time, so no case counts them as growth. The open sanctions disclosure is not given a fine in any case because the company expects any penalty to be immaterial; the bear case instead carries the bigger risk of losing the region. Margin-of-safety price. How sure are we of the earnings level? Only moderately. Owner earnings have ranged from a loss to $1.64 per share in ten years, and the $0.90 middle is a fair center, but any one year can be half or double that. The worst plausible outcome is several blows at once: forced exit from Russia and its neighbors, a strong dollar, and a Chinese crackdown on health-product direct sellers like the 2019 campaign. Earnings could then sit near zero for a few years, as they did in 2016 to 2018. The company would survive it: no debt, $82.5 million in cash, its own factory, and no customer large enough to matter on its own. Its real dependence is on networks of independent sellers in Taiwan, Japan, Korea and the United States, which can shrink. If we are wrong about the two things most likely to be wrong, the level (say $0.65 rather than $0.90) and growth (none), the shares are worth about $14. The company pays no regular dividend (a one-time $1.00 in 2021) but has bought back stock every year since 2021 ($16.3 million in 2025, with $14.8 million of authorization left), and it piles up roughly $0.90 per share a year of cash for owners over the holding period. Over a three-to-four-year holding period, from $11 the base case implies well over 20% a year, being wrong on level and growth implies roughly 11% to 13% a year, and only the bear case implies a loss. That is about the highest price at which the likely outcomes together still clear 20% a year, given how wide the outcomes are. The margin-of-safety price is $11.00. Changes since our previous analysis. Its figures were prepared on a different basis and are not comparable with these. Since then, the buyout of the China joint ventures has closed and the first half of 2026 brought higher margins but weaker cash flow and a shrinking Taiwan market.

Sales geography
Asia about 46% of sales (Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Mongolia); North America about 30% (United States across the Northeast, Midwest, South and West, plus Canada); Europe about 19% (Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Ireland, United Kingdom); Latin America and Other about 5% (Mexico, Panama and other Latin American countries, plus wholesale sales to Australia and New Zealand).
Historical growth strategy
Mostly organic growth: recruiting independent consultants and distributors and opening international markets, chiefly in Asia and Eastern Europe through its Synergy WorldWide brand, plus an 80/20 China joint venture with Fosun formed in 2014 and bought out in full in 2025. More recently it has added digital and e-commerce sales, subscription programs and online marketplaces, and has cut manufacturing and incentive costs to raise margins. It funds this from its own cash and has not done large acquisitions.
Chart analysis
A chartist would call NATR a stock in a sharp downtrend. After reaching about $28 within the past year, the shares broke down, then gapped about 19% lower on August 7, 2026 after second-quarter results (from about $20.30 to $16.40), never filled the gap, and kept making lower highs and lower lows. They fell roughly 42% in three months to about $12.45 in early October, within about 1% of the 52-week low of $12.32. The price is below both its falling 50-day and 200-day moving averages, a bearish setup with weak momentum. The $12 area is the support to watch; a decisive break would point toward the multi-year lows set in 2022. Overhead resistance sits at the unfilled gap around $16 to $16.50 and then at $20 to $22. A chartist would want to see a base form above $12 before calling a bottom.
