Business condition attached to the margin of safety A signed, named commercial supply, manufacturing, or licensing contract tied to output from the Hangzhou, China joint-venture facility, or another concrete, evidenced path to sustained revenue growth.
Liquidmetal Technologies licenses a family of amorphous-metal ("Liquidmetal") alloys and sells a small volume of parts made from them, mainly health-monitoring rings, other medical devices, sporting goods, and industrial components, produced through contract manufacturers and a small owned manufacturing operation. In 2010 the company sold Apple a one-time, paid-up perpetual license to use the technology in consumer electronics; that deal no longer generates any income, and today's revenue comes from ongoing product sales plus a small, shrinking stream of royalties (a licensing arrangement with the Swatch Group runs until the underlying patents expire). Total revenue has been under $1.4 million in every year of the last decade and fell 8.8% in 2025 to $784,000. The company has not earned a profit, on a cash basis, in any of the last eleven years. Owner earnings (operating cash flow after removing working-capital swings, stock compensation, and the capital spending needed just to maintain the business) has been negative every year, though the losses shrank substantially from roughly $9 million in 2015 to about $1.4-1.5 million in 2023-2024. In 2025 the loss widened again to about $2.0 million, which the company attributes to start-up costs, travel, and legal expenses tied to a new manufacturing joint venture it is building in Hangzhou, China, under a 36-month industrial lease signed in 2025. That facility could eventually let the company make more of its own parts and pursue new customers, but no supply contract or committed order tied to it has been disclosed, so we have not assumed any specific revenue from it. What keeps this company solvent, and gives the shares real value despite the losses, is a substantial cash and investment position built up from past capital raises: roughly $19.7 million in cash and short and long-term investments, plus a debt-free, company-owned office and manufacturing building in Lake Forest, California that it has begun subleasing for growing rental income (up 81% in 2025). There is no interest-bearing debt. The share count has been unchanged since 2023, so the company has not needed to raise new capital recently. On this base, book value works out to about 3 cents per share. We valued the shares as today's net cash, investments, and property, minus the present value of the cash we expect the licensing and products business to consume over the next ten years, discounted at 6%. Because nothing in the filings points to a specific driver of sustained profitability, we did not assume the business becomes self-funding, and we stopped projecting new losses or gains beyond the ten-year window rather than guess at what happens after that. The base case assumes the 2025 jump in costs was a one-time transition tied to standing up the China joint venture, consistent with management's own explanation, and that losses ease back toward the roughly $1.3 million pace the company had already achieved by 2022-2024 as growing building-rental income and investment income continue to offset a modest ongoing operating loss. On this path, we estimate the shares are worth about $0.018 today. The bear case assumes the joint venture disappoints or requires ongoing funding without a matching pickup in revenue, and that product revenue keeps drifting lower as it did in 2025, so losses stay near or slightly above 2025's elevated level for the next decade. That values the shares at about $0.011. We treated this as the low end of what we could defend, not a worst-case guess; the company's cash and investments are large enough to fund losses at this pace for well over a decade without needing to sell more stock, so we did not model a distress or bankruptcy scenario, since nothing in the filings points to one. The bull case assumes the China facility ramps successfully within its lease term and product revenue recovers toward the roughly $1.4 million high-water mark the company reached in 2019, while cost discipline (already shown in 2022-2024) resumes once the joint-venture start-up costs roll off. Losses would narrow toward a modest ongoing amount, largely offset by growing rental and investment income, valuing the shares at about $0.023. We stopped short of assuming outright profitability, since no signed contract supports it. Before finalizing these numbers we tested the base case's key assumption -- that the 2025 cost increase was temporary -- against the filings, and found a real complication: in 2025, costs rose by $447,000 while revenue fell 8.8%, so the expected normalization has not shown up yet. We kept the base case's near-term assumption flat rather than improving to reflect that, and did not let optimism about the China venture creep into the numbers without evidence. All three of these estimates sit well below the roughly $0.10 the stock last traded at (December 31, 2025), and below book value per share as well, which suggests the market is pricing in a much larger and more successful outcome for the technology than the last decade of results supports. Given the company's small scale, thin and volatile revenue, chronic operating losses, and the execution risk in standing up new manufacturing in China, the margin-of-safety price sits at a large discount to our estimate of value, and a margin-of-safety price anywhere near our base-case estimate would require a specific, signed commercial contract tied to the new China facility.

Sales geography
Not separately disclosed by geography in the filings. The company is US-based (Lake Forest, California), and its known revenue sources include US and international product customers (health-monitoring/medical devices, sporting goods, industrial parts) and a royalty arrangement with Switzerland-based Swatch Group; manufacturing is increasingly routed through a new joint-venture facility in Hangzhou, China, though that is a production location, not a disclosed sales-booking geography.
