Garmin designs and sells GPS-based hardware and software across five distinct end markets: fitness (wearable trackers and smartwatches), outdoor (adventure and dive watches, handhelds), aviation (avionics for aircraft manufacturers and the aftermarket), marine (chartplotters and other electronics for boats), and auto OEM (domain controllers and other components sold to automakers). It carries no long-term debt and holds a substantial net cash and investment position, so leverage is not a source of downside risk here. Owner earnings - cash the business generates after stripping out non-cash accounting charges, the swings in receivables, inventory and payables that move cash between periods without changing the underlying earning power, stock-based compensation, and the capital spending needed just to maintain (rather than grow) the existing business - have moved unevenly the past several years. A period of pandemic-era demand, a subsequent inventory correction (Garmin built up components and finished goods heavily in 2021 and worked the excess down through 2022-2023), and a strong recent re-acceleration make any single year a poor guide to the normal level. We use the median of the last three full fiscal years (2023-2025) as our starting point, which smooths past the correction while still reflecting the business as it operates today, with its current mix of segments. That recent re-acceleration is real and broad-based, not a one-off: net sales grew 20% in 2024 and 15% in 2025, with all five segments contributing. Fitness, driven by strong demand for wearables with health-tracking features, has gone from about a quarter of sales to about a third in two years and is now the largest segment. Outdoor, aviation and marine each grew at healthy, though more moderate, rates. Auto OEM revenue grew fastest of all, off a still-small base, but continues to run at an operating loss, which management has said is weighing on overall company profitability while it builds out its position with automaker customers. Our base case assumes owner earnings keep growing, but at a decelerating pace - roughly 10% next year, tapering toward the mid-single digits by the back half of the coming decade. We temper the recent pace because fitness sits in the most competitive part of Garmin's business (named competitors include Apple, Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, and dedicated players like Whoop and Oura), and because outdoor growth has already slowed sharply, from 16% in 2024 to 5% in 2025, suggesting fitness's current pace will not persist indefinitely either. Beyond ten years, we assume the earnings level simply persists rather than keeps compounding: Garmin has sustained heavy product-development spending, consistently in the mid-teens as a percentage of sales, across all five markets for decades, which supports the business continuing at a steady level, but assuming further growth beyond a decade would mean guessing at products that do not yet exist, so we do not. On this basis, we estimate the shares are worth roughly $205 today. The bear case assumes the fitness business loses momentum to larger competitors sooner rather than later, outdoor growth keeps decelerating toward flat, and auto OEM continues to lose money throughout the next decade rather than reaching breakeven - a real risk given three straight years of segment losses. Under that combination, owner earnings essentially stop growing within a few years. Even so, because the balance sheet carries no debt, the company does not become distressed; we estimate it is worth roughly $130 even in this scenario. The bull case assumes the current growth phase - fitness, aviation, marine and auto OEM all expanding together - continues for several more years before slowing, consistent with the growth actually delivered the past two years, plus auto OEM eventually turning profitable as its already-awarded supplier contracts scale up. That scenario is worth roughly $265. One risk worth flagging plainly: Garmin's principal manufacturing for consumer products is based in Taiwan, and the company has disclosed the geopolitical risk that entails. We have not built a specific cross-strait disruption into any of the three cases, since it is not something with a defined probability or timeline, but it is a real risk worth being aware of, separate from the ordinary business risks captured above. Given the spread between these outcomes, and the need for a margin of safety against being wrong about the more competitive, faster-growing parts of the business, the margin-of-safety price is around $120 a share, below even the bear-case estimate.
