GameStop sells video game hardware, software and collectibles online and through about 2,206 stores: 1,598 in the United States, 300 in Australia and 308 in France at January 31, 2026. It is now really two businesses. One is a shrinking retailer that has recently become profitable. The other is roughly $10.9 billion of cash, Treasury securities, listed-equity holdings, derivatives and bitcoin, partly paid for with $4.2 billion of convertible notes that pay no interest. The retailer. Sales fell from $8.5 billion in fiscal 2017 to $3.63 billion in fiscal 2025, the year ended January 31, 2026. In fiscal 2025 software sales fell 27.5% and hardware sales fell 12.3%. Collectibles, led by trading cards, rose 47.7% to $1,060 million, which lifted the gross margin to 33.0% from 29.1%. Management closed 727 U.S. stores, disposed of the Canadian business and put the French business up for sale, and selling and administrative costs fell by $220 million. Operating income was $232 million, after losses in each of the three years before. In the first half of fiscal 2026 alone it was $303.5 million, against $55.6 million a year earlier, even though second-quarter sales fell 18.7% to $790 million. Owner earnings. This is the cash the business generates after working-capital swings, stock compensation and capital spending. It was $570 million in fiscal 2025, about $1.04 per diluted share, up from $0.40 in fiscal 2024. Fiscal 2020 through 2022 were negative. We measure the business from fiscal 2024, after the equity raises and store restructuring that created today's company. The median of those two years is about $0.72 per share. The last four reported quarters all reflect the lower cost base, so we start the first year near fiscal 2025's level instead of that median: about $0.97 per share, below last year's $1.04. That first year has two sources: - about $420 million of pre-tax store profit - about $185 million of interest on the $5.06 billion of cash and Treasuries still held on August 1, 2026, earning about 3.7%, the rate implied by first-quarter interest income About $1.37 billion of tax-loss carryforwards keeps cash taxes low for roughly two years. After that we assume a 24% tax rate. The investments. In the first half of fiscal 2026 the company paid about $4.4 billion for listed-equity holdings, carried at $4.95 billion on August 1, 2026. It also holds derivative positions carried at $0.60 billion, and after year end it pledged about $0.7 billion of cash as collateral for derivative trades. Its bitcoin, acquired for $500 million, is carried at roughly $0.29 billion after losses of $131.6 million in fiscal 2025 and $73.9 million in the first half of fiscal 2026. None of these holdings produces cash earnings, so we value them at their reported fair values, less tax on recent gains. The filings we reviewed do not name the equity holding or give the derivative terms, and the holding's carried value is about $0.65 billion above the cash paid plus the gains reported so far, a gap we could not explain from the filings. We take these at the balance-sheet figures. Accounting judgements. We added back the $131.6 million bitcoin loss and a one-time $42.2 million charge for warrants given to noteholders, because neither used cash. We value cash as the interest it earns plus getting the principal back in ten years, which is worth less than face value at our 6% required return. The notes pay no interest. We valued the shares two ways: noteholders converting into about 143.6 million new shares, or the company repaying $1.5 billion in 2030 and $2.7 billion in 2032 in cash. We use whichever result is worse for today's shareholders. The cases. Base case, $20.68 per share: store profit starts at $420 million and shrinks 7% a year, in line with the long decline in physical game sales, with collectibles partly offsetting it; the investments are held at fair value. Bear case, $12.72: collectibles demand fades (it has only two years of strong results), store profit starts at $330 million and falls 15% a year, the concentrated equity holding and derivatives lose 45%, bitcoin halves, and the notes are repaid in cash. Bull case, $23.41: collectibles and the new Power Packs trading-card platform keep store profit near $480 million, falling only 3% a year, and the investments hold their value. About four-fifths of the value sits in cash and securities, so the main question is how management uses that money. The company says it intends to use its balance sheet for acquisitions and control transactions. Its investment policy allows concentrated positions, derivatives and leverage, and the bitcoin purchase has lost money so far. This valuation would be too high if the collectibles margins prove temporary or if the capital goes into deals earning well below 6%. The margin-of-safety price is $12.50, about the bear-case value. That is a wide margin of safety, because the outcome depends largely on capital-allocation decisions that have not been made yet.
