Calix sells broadband access equipment (its Intelligent Access EDGE systems and third-generation platform), plus cloud software and managed services, to small and mid-sized US broadband providers. It has no customer above 10% of revenue, so it does not depend on any one buyer. Revenue was $1.0 billion in 2025 (up 20%), gross margin rose to 56.8%, and software and services (62.9% margin) is the faster-growing, higher-margin piece. Contracted backlog for cloud and subscription services was $385 million at year-end 2025, 39% of it due to be recognized within a year. How we measure earnings. We start with operating cash flow, remove swings in receivables, inventory, supplier deposits and payables, and then subtract stock-based compensation as a real cost. Calix pays about $88 million a year in stock compensation (roughly 9% of revenue), which is why owner earnings are far lower than reported cash flow: $37 million ($0.54 per share) in 2025 against $135 million of operating cash flow. Growth spending on equipment is separated from maintenance spending; it is small (about 1.7% of revenue). Amortization of acquired intangibles is immaterial here. Results since 2020 per share were $0.78, $1.09, $0.53, $0.31, -$0.72 and $0.54. 2024 was negative because revenue fell 20% while compensation costs did not. We use the median of 2020-2025, $0.53 per share, because this window covers a full up-and-down cycle and the business as it exists now (profitable, cloud-enabled); earlier years were loss-making and describe a different company. 2021 net income was inflated by a one-time tax benefit and is not used. Growth check. Owner earnings rebounded from -$0.72 to $0.54 in 2025, but that is a return to normal, not growth we can rely on. We assume no growth in year 1 and beyond. We left out share gains, the third-generation platform's international push, new products, margin expansion, and any broadband-funding program (including the federal BEAD program) because none is contracted; the $385 million backlog mostly replaces revenue already in our level rather than adding to it. Base case, about $5.00 per share: owner earnings hold at $0.53 for ten years, then fade to zero over the following ten years, because the evidence for the installed base and subscription contracts runs a few years, not decades, and we do not assume replacement. Bear case, about $0.75 per share: a repeat of the 2024-type downturn (broadband-provider budgets pause, revenue down about 20%) recurs often enough that average owner earnings are about $0.10 a year for ten years, then nothing. Supporting facts: $318 million of firm supplier purchase commitments that can force inventory write-downs when demand slips, tariff exposure on hardware made outside the US, and pricing pressure from larger competitors. Bull case, about $10.25 per share: owner earnings sustain $1.09, the level already achieved in 2021, for ten years, then fade over ten years; gross margin gains of 2.2 points in 2025 and the growing software mix make that level reachable without new products. What would make this wrong: the stock-compensation burden is the swing factor; if it fell or revenue scaled faster than costs, earnings would be higher, and if broadband customers cut spending again, lower. Calix holds no debt to speak of in our reading and we have not added cash to the value; this is a conservative choice. Our figures reconcile to reported cash flow within roughly 5-15% across years; the remainder comes from small non-cash and lease items we did not separately itemize. Second-quarter 2026 results were not available in our data and are not reflected.
