Belden makes the cable, connectors, and networking equipment that carry data and power through buildings, factories, and data centers. It operates two segments: Smart Infrastructure Solutions (roughly 45% of revenue) sells copper and fiber cabling, connectivity, and power/cooling equipment used in data centers, 5G networks, fiber-to-the-home buildouts, and commercial buildings; Automation Solutions (roughly 55% of revenue) sells industrial networking and connectivity products used in warehousing and logistics, energy, transportation, and factory automation. The company has grown for years through a steady stream of small, bolt-on acquisitions that add technology and customer relationships to both segments. We build our estimate of what the business earns for its owners from cash actually generated: cash from operations, less the swings caused by inventory and receivables timing, less stock-based compensation (a real cost that accounting otherwise hides), and less the capital spending needed just to keep the existing business running (separated from spending aimed at growing it). Over 2020 to 2025, that figure swung from about $1.27 a diluted share in the pandemic-depressed 2020 to about $6.15 a share in 2025, largely tracking the industrial cycle: 2024 was a weak destocking year across factory automation (Automation Solutions revenue fell about 5%), and 2025 was a sharp rebound (Automation Solutions revenue grew about 14%, mostly real volume, not just acquisitions). We used the middle year of that five-year swing, 2022, as our anchor for normal earning power: about $4.95 a share, deliberately excluding the 2020 COVID trough as a one-off shock rather than a representative low point. A sizable share of Belden's reported earnings includes the amortization of intangible assets built up through its acquisition history (roughly $79 million in 2025, more than half of total depreciation and amortization). We add this back, as it is a non-cash accounting charge tied to past deals, not current operations. But we do not assume the company can grow forever on the back of continued dealmaking, since acquisition spending is not charged against these earnings in our math. Instead, we treat Belden's core franchise, cable and connector manufacturing serving durable, non-obsolescing infrastructure needs, as capable of modest, self-funded growth on its own, and we are conservative about how much of the recent acquisition-fueled growth carries forward unaided. Our base case assumes Belden continues growing earnings at a mid-single-digit pace for several years as the current rebound in factory automation spending and continued data-center-driven demand for high-speed connectivity persist, tapering to roughly 3% annual growth by year ten as the recovery matures, and settling into a modest, low single-digit growth rate indefinitely after that, reflecting a business selling infrastructure that customers replace and expand over decades. That produces a value of about $131 a share. Because a business's value increasingly depends on assumptions further into the future, more than three-fifths of this value rests on what Belden earns beyond the next ten years — a reasonable bet on this kind of connectivity infrastructure franchise, but one investors should recognize as a long-duration wager, not a short-term catalyst play. Our bear case assumes a renewed and more severe version of the 2024 slowdown: a global industrial pullback compounded by the tariff and trade-policy disruption the company has flagged as a live risk, which we assume is not fully passed through to prices, compressing margins meaningfully for two to three years before a partial, slower recovery. We also account for Belden's roughly $1.1 billion of fixed-rate debt (recently refinanced in January 2026 at a somewhat higher 4.25% rate) as a real, if moderate, burden that bites harder in a downturn. That produces a value of about $75 a share. Our bull case assumes the current AI-and-data-center buildout meaningfully accelerates demand for Belden's high-speed copper and fiber connectivity products, factory automation spending stays strong as manufacturers continue investing in digitization, and the company's long, largely successful run of bolt-on acquisitions continues without a stumble, lifting margins toward the high end of its recent range. That produces a value of about $181 a share. Given how much better the bear case holds up than a truly speculative business (it does not go anywhere near zero), the margin-of-safety price is set at a moderate discount to our base-case estimate, around $94 a share, rather than the steepest discount our framework allows. A few notes on judgment calls: we treated 2020 as a non-representative pandemic trough and excluded it from our normal-earnings estimate, though it is recorded in the underlying data. We also assumed Belden's largest customer relationship (about 14% of revenue) persists at roughly its current level in the base case, with loss of a portion of that relationship treated as a bear-case risk rather than a near-certainty. Nothing in the filings we reviewed pointed to solvency, accounting, or disclosure concerns.
