Corning makes specialty glass, ceramics and optical fiber. Sales were $15.6 billion in 2025, up 19%. Optical Communications (fiber, cable and connectors for carrier networks and AI data centers) was 38% of segment sales. The rest is display glass for TVs and monitors, Gorilla Glass and other premium glass for phones, automotive emissions products, life sciences labware, and Hemlock Semiconductor and other newer businesses. Outside investors own part of Hemlock and a few other subsidiaries. HOW WE MEASURED EARNINGS. We count the cash the business generates after stock compensation and after the capital spending needed just to keep plants running. We remove swings in receivables, inventories, payables, customer deposits and deferred income, because they reverse over time. Corning's 2025 cash flow was helped by upfront customer payments under long-term supply agreements and by government incentive cash, together a $268 million inflow that year; we treated those as timing items and removed them. Spending to add capacity is not counted as a running cost. A separate 'other' cash line of $274 million in 2025 ($223 million in 2024) was left in, and we could not break it down from the filings. Because Corning's borrowings are valued on their own and subtracted at the end, we measure earnings before interest. Per share, that cash flow was $2.28 in 2021, $1.40 in 2022, $0.89 in 2023, $1.88 in 2024 and $2.55 in 2025. We anchor on the middle of those five years, $1.88 a share (about $1.65 billion), because they include the 2021-22 display peak, the 2023 customer destocking trough and the recovery since. We left out 2016 to 2020: capital spending then ran at 12% to 20% of sales while new display and fiber capacity was being built, and 2020 was the pandemic year. WHAT IS CREDITED AS GROWTH. Cash flow per share rose 35% in 2025. Our base case assumes only 8% in the first year, well below that, and tapering to 3% by year five. The evidence behind it is already in hand: management's 2026 capital budget of about $1.7 billion (versus $1.3 billion in 2025) for capacity being built now, customer prepayment balances of $1.5 billion at December 2025 (up from $1.1 billion a year earlier), first-half 2026 sales of $8.65 billion versus $7.31 billion a year earlier (up 18%), and first-half operating cash flow of $2.08 billion versus $0.86 billion. The company also reports it reached its Springboard sales and margin targets a year early. We did not credit management's future targets, new products, further margin gains, or any hyperscale customer deal that the annual report does not describe, because none of them has happened yet. DEBT. At June 30, 2026, Corning had $8.4 billion of borrowings (including finance leases) against $2.5 billion of cash. Only about $2.1 billion falls due in the five years after December 2025, and the long-dated fixed-rate bonds (3.9% to 7.25%, due 2029 through 2057) cost less than 6%: 2025 cash interest was $311 million. We reduced the debt figure by about $0.6 billion for that. We added about $0.66 billion for the outside owners' share of Hemlock and other partly owned subsidiaries, whose cash flow is included in full. Net claims ahead of shareholders come to about $6.0 billion, or $6.83 a share on about 875 million shares. THE THREE CASES. Bear: display glass price pressure (Corning reset its yen pricing base in 2025 and had to raise prices to offset it) and a pause in AI fiber orders send cash flow back to the 2023 trough of $0.89 a share, roughly $780 million, and hold it there for ten years, then fade 5% a year as products age with no successor. That still covers interest about 2.5 times. The business is worth about $10.83 a share (roughly $9.5 billion), it owes $6.83, leaving $4.00. Base: cash flow starts at $1.88, grows 8%, 6%, 5%, 4% and 3% to about $2.43 a share, stays flat through year ten, then fades 3% a year. The record supporting that fade is Corning's repeated invention of new product lines (low-loss optical fiber in 1970, Gorilla Glass, Ceramic Shield) on research spending of about $1 billion a year, but individual products age. The business is worth about $31.65 a share (roughly $27.7 billion), it owes $6.83, leaving $24.82. Bull: the 2025 level of $2.55 holds, and the capacity under construction and prepaid supply contracts execute well, growing 8%, 7%, 6%, 5% and 4% to about $3.41, then flat and fading 3% a year after year ten. The business is worth about $44.25 a share (roughly $38.7 billion), it owes $6.83, leaving $37.42. WHAT HAS CHANGED. Our August 2026 view was $6.21, $14.09 and $30.45. The base and bull values are higher because that work required a 10% to 12% annual return and averaged nine years dominated by heavy-spending, weak-cash years, and because 2025 and the first half of 2026 show a clearly higher earnings level. The bear value is lower because it now subtracts the net borrowings explicitly against a trough-level cash flow. WHAT WOULD MAKE THIS WRONG. (1) Some of the recent strength is not permanent: government incentives recognized but not yet received rose to about $493 million at the end of 2025 from about $116 million, and a change in those credits would cut profits. (2) A South Korean tax dispute over the 2010 to 2019 tax years is held as a receivable under appeal and is not separately modeled. (3) If the unexplained 'other' cash lines reverse, the anchor would be closer to $1.63 a share, which would lower the base value. (4) Display and AI fiber demand are cyclical, and the 2023 trough shows how quickly cash flow can halve. MARGIN-OF-SAFETY PRICE. The margin-of-safety price is about $13.00 a share, roughly half the base value, given a cyclical business that has shown a 2.9x swing between its trough and peak years and carries meaningful debt. That price sits well above the bear value, so it relies on the business proving closer to the base case.

Chart analysis
This review did not use a daily price series, so the comments below describe how a chart reader would frame the stock rather than reading specific price levels. Corning's annual report compares five years of cumulative shareholder return (from December 31, 2020) against the S&P 500 and the S&P Communications Equipment index. A chart reader would look first at whether the shares are in a long-term uptrend, meaning higher highs and higher lows and a price above its rising 200-day average, and would note that the business story behind any such trend is the shift toward fiber for AI data centers. They would watch for the usual warning signs of a mature run: failed retests of prior highs and a break below the 50-day and 200-day averages. Prior resistance zones from earlier peaks and the base formed during the 2023 slowdown would be the support and resistance areas they mark. A stock that has re-rated quickly tends to be volatile around earnings dates, so a chart reader would treat any earnings gap as a level to defend.
