AtriCure makes surgical devices used mainly during heart surgery. Its biggest product line is the AtriClip. Surgeons use it to close off the left atrial appendage, a small pouch in the heart where clots that cause strokes can form. Appendage management brought in $178.1 million of US sales in 2025, up 17.5%. The other lines are open surgical ablation, where the EnCompass clamp treats atrial fibrillation during open-heart surgery ($143.8 million, up 16.3%), and pain management, where the cryoSPHERE probes freeze nerves to cut post-surgical and amputation pain ($81.9 million, up 32.5%). International sales grew 20.2% to $99.2 million. Total revenue was $534.5 million in 2025, compared with $129.8 million in 2015, a compound growth rate of about 15% a year over the decade. For most of its history AtriCure lost money. We measure the cash the business produces for its owners. We start with operating cash flow, strip out swings in working capital, and subtract stock-based compensation as a real cost. That cost was $44.7 million in 2025, about 8% of sales. We also subtract the capital spending needed to keep the business running. On that basis the company lost roughly $19 million to $47 million a year from 2016 through 2024. 2025 was the first positive year, at about $10.3 million, or 22 cents per share. The first half of 2026 improved further. Revenue grew 13.5% and operating income swung from a $12.1 million loss to a $10.2 million profit. We estimate first-half owner earnings at roughly $15 million, against about breakeven a year earlier. Because the business only just crossed into profit, an average of past years would value a company with $535 million of sales and 75% gross margins as worthless. We do not think that describes it. So we start from the 2025 result and let the path of future earnings rest on the operating leverage the company has already shown. In 2025, sales rose $69 million while owner earnings rose about $29 million. Part of that came from a one-time $6 million drop in payments under a pulsed-field-ablation development agreement. Even without it, about a third of each new sales dollar fell through to owner earnings. The main evidenced risk is technology displacement. Minimally invasive ablation sales, the company's hybrid procedure, fell 31.2% in 2025 to $31.5 million in the US because electrophysiologists are switching to pulsed-field-ablation catheters. That shows how quickly a franchise can be overtaken. Accounting adds back amortization and write-offs of acquired technology, including $6 million, $12 million and $30 million of in-process R&D and asset purchases in 2025, 2024 and 2023. We carry that recurring spending in the bear case. The company has about $392 million of federal tax loss carryforwards plus $22 million of research credits. Our cases assume little cash tax until these are used up, around the early 2030s in the base case, and a roughly 23% tax rate after that. The balance sheet is conservative: $167.8 million of cash against $61.0 million drawn on a JPMorgan asset-based credit line at June 30, 2026. Base case, $28.73 per share: sales growth of 13% in 2026, matching the first half, slowing steadily to 5% by 2035 as the hybrid line winds down and the core lines mature. About 25 cents of each added sales dollar becomes owner earnings. That produces roughly $28 million of owner earnings in 2026 and about $139 million after tax in 2035. Earnings then hold flat for 15 more years and stop. We do not assume indefinite life, given how fast pulsed-field ablation eroded the hybrid business. Bear case, $8.84 per share: the hybrid business disappears, growth drops to 9% in 2026 and to 3% by 2029, only 15 cents of each new sales dollar is kept, and about $10 million a year keeps going to acquired technology. Earnings last only 10 years beyond 2035. Bull case, $65.76 per share: the ten-year record of about 15% growth continues for three more years before tapering to 7%. Incremental margins of 35% sit near the level shown in 2025 and early 2026, and the franchise lasts 25 years beyond 2035. We gave no value to the LeAAPS trial. It finished enrolling 6,573 patients in July 2025 to test whether closing the appendage prevents strokes in heart-surgery patients without atrial fibrillation, but efficacy follow-up runs at least five years and the result is unknown. We also gave no value to the unapproved dual-energy ablation platform. A positive LeAAPS result would push value above our bull case. The valuation depends on margins continuing to expand, and that has been demonstrated for only about six quarters. The first-half 2026 owner earnings figure is estimated from quarterly data that do not fully break out every working-capital line. The margin-of-safety price is $15.00, a wide discount to the base case, because a newly profitable device maker facing evidenced technology risk calls for a large margin of safety.
