Business condition attached to the margin of safety Owner earnings (operating cash flow after stock compensation and after removing working-capital swings) must turn positive on a trailing four-quarter basis, showing that IBSRELA growth is outrunning the cost base and the term-loan repayment due July 2028 is covered.
Ardelyx sells two products from one molecule, tenapanor: IBSRELA for irritable bowel syndrome with constipation, and XPHOZAH for lowering phosphorus in dialysis patients. Revenue reached $407 million in 2025 (product sales $378 million), up from $334 million in 2024 and $124 million in 2023. IBSRELA grew 73% in 2025 to $274 million; XPHOZAH fell 36% to $104 million after it was folded into Medicare's dialysis bundled payment on January 1, 2025, which the company says cut its revenue and will keep growth well below early expectations. First-half 2026 revenue was $215 million, about 25% above the prior year. The key point for valuation is that the business does not yet generate cash for its owners. We measure owner earnings as operating cash flow, adding back the cash tied up in receivables and inventory as the launch ramps, then deducting stock compensation and the small capital spending. On that basis owner earnings were about -$0.42 per share in 2022, -$0.31 in 2023, -$0.12 in 2024 and -$0.24 in 2025. Stock compensation has risen from $11 million to $49 million a year and offsets most of the improvement in operations. First-half 2026 operating cash burn of $39 million was smaller than the $64 million burned a year earlier, but the second half of 2025 was the stronger period, so this is seasonal and not yet proof of a turn. We have used the years since the commercial launches (2022 to 2025) as the window; the median is negative, and we did not lift the level for expected profitability. Growth reconciliation: owner earnings worsened in 2025 versus 2024 (from -$29 million to -$57 million), and the base case assumes no improvement in year one, so no deceleration reversal has to be argued. Bear case (worth about $0): XPHOZAH keeps declining under the bundled payment, IBSRELA growth stalls, and the company continues to burn roughly $50-60 million a year. It has $265 million of cash and short-term investments against $210 million of term loans due July 1, 2028, so the cash would be largely consumed and shareholders left with little or nothing after 2028. The company does not appear to owe more than it is worth today, but there is no cash-generating value we can point to in this case. Base case (about $0): We can name and evidence rising IBSRELA sales and patent protection for tenapanor out to 2042, but we cannot point to a signed contract or track record that turns owner earnings positive. Continued share gains and cost leverage are hopes, not evidenced drivers, so we assign no value beyond breakeven. Shareholders are effectively holding an option on the business turning profitable, funded by existing cash. Bull case (about $4 per share): The company's own levers execute. IBSRELA, which has more than doubled in two years, keeps growing, total revenue continues to rise about 20-25% a year as in the first half of 2026, and operating costs grow slower, taking owner earnings to breakeven in 2027 and roughly $140 million a year by the mid-2030s, held flat until tenapanor patents run out around 2042 and then fading to zero. What would make us wrong: a faster path to profit would make even the base case worth more; the 2025 ability to fund operations without selling shares (no sales under the at-the-market program) and a strong second-half cash flow are the main evidence in that direction. On the other side, a $50 million additional loan tranche can still be drawn by mid-2026 and the company retains equity-sale capacity of $100 million, so dilution is a real risk to per-share values. We did not reconcile every non-cash line in the cash-flow statement independently; working-capital signs were taken from the filing's reconciliation. The margin-of-safety price is a low $1 per share, and it applies only once owner earnings turn positive.
