Business condition attached to the margin of safety Two consecutive quarters of positive operating cash flow after stock-based compensation, achieved without new share issuance, showing the company has stopped funding losses from its cash and shareholders.
Aquestive Therapeutics makes drugs in the form of thin dissolving films. Almost all of its revenue today comes from manufacturing films for other companies: Suboxone film for Indivior (about 73% of 2025 revenue), Ondif for Hypera in Brazil, and Sympazan for Assertio, plus small royalties. Its own products have not worked commercially so far. Libervant, a diazepam film for young children, was withdrawn from the US market in April 2025 when its market access ended. The company's future depends on Anaphylm, an epinephrine film for severe allergic reactions. The FDA rejected it in early 2026 with a complete response letter. Aquestive ran new human-factors and pharmacokinetic studies and resubmitted the application on September 17, 2026, so a decision is expected around the first quarter of 2027. The track record is the key fact. Owner earnings are the cash left after running the business, paying staff partly in stock, and maintaining the plant. They have been negative in every year from 2018 through 2025, from about -$0.08 per share in 2023 to -$2.54 in 2018, and were -$0.68 in 2025. The 2025 loss was widened by about $14 million of legal costs, a $4.3 million FDA filing fee and launch preparation. Results in the first half of 2026 were much better: revenue rose 51% and the operating loss fell to $12.4 million. The company still guides to a 2026 cash operating loss of about $30-35 million before stock pay. How we valued it: we count only earnings that are secured or already proven. Anaphylm has no approval and no sales, so none of our cases gives it any value. That is a deliberate choice, not a forecast that it will fail. We also left out the separate royalty funding from RTW Investments ($75 million) and the $20 million loan tranche, because both arrive only on approval. What remains is the film-manufacturing business. In 2025 it earned about $26 million after production costs on $45 million of revenue, before overhead and interest. Management itself describes Suboxone revenue as declining. We charge the spending the company has committed to before the FDA decision (about $36 million through early 2027) and count the $98.5 million of cash on hand at June 30, 2026. Against that we set repayment of the $55 million Oaktree loan, which is interest-only and due in 2031. A roughly $62 million accounting liability from the 2020 sale of KYNMOBI royalties is not counted, because the filings state it will never require cash. Cash flows are discounted at 6%. Base case, about $0.38 per share: after the FDA decision, the manufacturing business earns about $4 million a year after overhead, stock pay and interest, shrinking about 7% a year as Suboxone declines, and fades out by about 2040. Most of the value is the cash left after the pre-decision spending and the loan repayment. Bull case, about $0.61 per share: Suboxone and Ondif volumes hold up closer to their first-half 2026 pace. The manufacturing business earns about $7 million a year and declines only about 3% a year. Bear case, about -$0.07 per share: Anaphylm is rejected again, or it is approved and its launch fails, as Libervant's did. Losses continue through 2028 at about $80 million in total. Meanwhile the concentration on Indivior works against the company, and Suboxone falls about 15% a year. In this case the company would owe roughly $9 million more than the business and its cash are worth, and shareholders would have nothing left. Existing holders would likely also be diluted by new share sales. The company has already said its current cash may not cover a full launch without more funding. Its auditor also flagged the company's own going-concern assessment as a critical audit matter in the 2025 audit, although the company concluded it has enough liquidity for at least twelve months. What would make this wrong: an Anaphylm approval followed by a successful launch would be worth far more than these figures, and our cases do not include it. An epinephrine film that needs no needle is a real product opportunity. But its value depends on an approval that has not been given and on sales that have never been shown against established injectors and the nasal spray neffy. Our estimate would rise mainly as that value becomes proven. Because the losses so far are funded from cash and share sales, the margin-of-safety price applies only once the company shows it can stop losing cash. At that point, the margin-of-safety price is about $0.18, well below the base value.
