Business condition attached to the margin of safety Owner earnings (operating cash flow less working-capital swings, stock compensation and maintenance capex) turn positive for a full fiscal year.
Alkami Technology sells cloud-based digital banking software (online and mobile banking, account opening, business banking, fraud and marketing tools) to community, regional and super-regional banks and credit unions in the United States. Substantially all revenue is subscription (SaaS) revenue. Revenue grew from $152M in 2021 to $444M in 2025, and the company reports about $1.7 billion of contracted future revenue at December 31, 2025, roughly 49% of it recognized over the next 24 months and a further 34% in months 25 to 48. The key issue is that revenue growth has not yet produced owner earnings. We measure owner earnings as operating cash flow, minus swings in working capital, minus stock-based compensation (a real cost paid in shares), minus the capital spending needed to stay in business (including capitalized software). On that basis the business lost about $48M in 2025 ($0.46 per share), versus $46M in 2024, $69M in 2023, $78M in 2022 and $48M in 2021. Operating cash flow itself turned positive ($43M in 2025), but stock compensation of $76M more than absorbs it. The trend is improving: the loss was about 38% of revenue in 2022 and about 11% in 2025. In the first half of 2026 operating cash flow was $17M against a $4.5M outflow a year earlier, while stock compensation was roughly flat at $35M, so the gap is narrowing. This was the only quarter-level evidence used; we did not move the level of earnings on it. Growth check: owner earnings actually improved by only about $2M in 2025 (from -$46M to -$48M on our basis, essentially flat). The base case assumes a much better 2026 (about -$26M), which is supported by the first-half 2026 result, where the loss before working-capital effects roughly halved from about $44M to about $22M; 2025 was heavily weighted to the first half in the same way, so the full-year improvement is assumed to be smaller than the half-year one. Bear case (about -$3.40 per share): the FY2025 loss of roughly $48M a year simply continues for ten years and nothing beyond that is credited. The company also has $345M of 1.50% convertible notes due 2030 that must be repaid or converted, and the company would have to fund continuing losses from cash or new capital. On this basis the business appears to owe more than it is worth to shareholders, by roughly $355M in present value across ten years of losses, or about $3.40 per share. Base case (about -$0.30 per share): the loss narrows to about $26M in 2026 and $10M in 2027, then reaches breakeven and stays there, with nothing credited beyond that. The narrowing rests on the stock-compensation and cost trend already shown in the filings; it does not credit new products, new clients or higher prices. Even so, the near-term losses leave the value slightly below zero. Bull case (about $1.10 per share): the loss narrows to about $20M in 2026 and about $5M in 2027, then owner earnings reach about $25M a year (roughly 5% of current revenue, supported by the $1.7 billion of contracted revenue) for eight years, after which nothing further is credited. What was left out: continued double-digit revenue growth, new client wins, cross-selling of products such as MANTL account opening, and margin expansion beyond the near-term path, because none is contracted or a repeatable, funded-from-cash record; growth has been funded in part by share issuance and $345M of debt. We also did not add the company's cash or subtract its debt, since owner earnings are already after interest cost. What would make this wrong: if stock compensation were cut sharply (rather than held near $70M+) or if the contracted revenue carries much higher margins than the past record shows, the value would be higher. If the interim improvement reverses, value falls toward the bear case. This is a near-breakeven business by our measure; the margin-of-safety price applies only once it has actually produced positive owner earnings for a full year.
