Alector is a clinical-stage biotechnology company in South San Francisco, California, developing treatments for neurodegenerative disease. It has no product or royalty revenue. Its revenue has come entirely from research partnerships: $21.0 million in 2025, down from $100.6 million in 2024 and $133.6 million in 2022. That revenue is largely the gradual recognition of large upfront payments received years earlier (GSK paid $700 million in 2021 and January 2022), not new cash coming in. Why the business produces no earnings to value. After deducting stock compensation and the working-capital swings that distort cash flow (mainly the up-and-down recognition of the GSK and AbbVie upfront payments), the company's owner earnings have been negative every year we measured, at roughly minus $1.28 to minus $1.66 per share in each of 2022 through 2025 (minus $1.33 in 2025). In 2021 the reported operating cash flow was a positive $298.6 million only because of the $292.9 million increase in deferred revenue from the GSK payment; stripped of that, 2021 was about minus $0.32 per share. Because nothing in the filings shows a product, contract or royalty that will turn these losses into profits, we give the research pipeline no value. The shares are therefore worth what the cash on hand is worth after the company's remaining obligations, less what is burned along the way. What changed in 2025. In January 2025 AbbVie ended the TREM2 collaboration after the AL002 Phase 2 trial missed its primary goal, so a $250 million milestone payment was never received. In October 2025 the Phase 3 INFRONT-3 trial of latozinemab in frontotemporal dementia missed its clinical co-primary endpoint. The company stopped that program, cut about 47% of its workforce, and noted that $250 million of related milestone payments will not be earned through that route. Its remaining clinical program is nivisnebart (with GSK) in a 76-week Phase 2 trial in early Alzheimer's disease, with completion expected in 2026 and an independent interim futility analysis planned for the first half of 2026 (we did not find its outcome in the filings we reviewed). The company also has preclinical programs, and the GSK agreement originally offered up to $1.5 billion of further milestones. We do not credit any of that: a trial result, a milestone or a new product that has not yet happened is not something we can point to as already secured. If nivisnebart works, the value of these shares could be far higher than any case below. That upside is outside our valuation by design. The assets. At June 30, 2026 the company held $172.8 million of cash and marketable securities ($59.9 million cash, $112.9 million securities), down from $256.0 million at December 31, 2025. Operating cash flow was minus $84.0 million in the first half of 2026, about $42 million a quarter. Obligations we can see at December 31, 2025 were about $9.7 million of debt (a Hercules term loan) and $26.5 million of lease liabilities, together $36.2 million. Weighted shares in the second quarter of 2026 were about 111.2 million. The $171.2 million of deferred revenue on the balance sheet is an accounting balance from the GSK payment, recognized gradually as revenue, not a cash claim, so we do not deduct it. The three cases. All three treat cash less debt and leases as the only evidenced value and differ only in how much cash is spent before the story ends. - Bear: about $0.00 per share. The company keeps spending at its first-half 2026 pace for four more quarters (about $168 million), the pipeline produces nothing we can count, and the remaining cash of roughly $5 million would fall about $31 million short of the $36.2 million of debt and lease obligations. Shareholders would receive essentially nothing, and we record the value as zero rather than below zero. - Base: about $0.47 per share. The company continues at the first-half pace for two more quarters (about $84 million) and then stops or is wound down: $172.8 million less $84.0 million leaves $88.8 million, less $36.2 million of debt and leases is $52.5 million, or about $0.47 across 111.2 million shares. We chose two quarters because the Alzheimer's trial's interim analysis and completion fall in 2026, and it is the point at which management would have to decide how to proceed. - Bull: about $1.23 per share. The company preserves its cash, for example by settling obligations and returning what remains: $172.8 million less $36.2 million is $136.6 million, or about $1.23 per share. We include no drug success in the bull case. Growth. Owner earnings worsened from about minus $123 million in 2024 to minus $137 million in 2025 (about 11% more negative), and we assume the losses continue at the current pace rather than improve. No growth is credited: the company has no repeatable process that has produced earnings, and its revenue is a declining balance of past upfront payments. What could make this wrong. The company says the cash provides runway at least through 2027, which implies a slower burn than the first half of 2026; the first-half figure may include remaining payments on the refund liability owed to the collaboration partner ($11.4 million at December 31, 2025), so a lower burn would raise the base case. We could not fully reconcile how much of the first-half 2026 outflow will recur. Also, we use debt and lease balances from December 31, 2025; they will be somewhat lower now. On the other side, a wind-down would bring severance and contract costs we cannot measure, and the company has sold new shares before (7.1 million shares in 2025 for about $20 million), which dilutes existing holders. The company also disclosed that its stock traded below $1.00 during the second quarter of 2025 and that Nasdaq listing requires a $1.00 minimum bid price, which is a further risk to the shares. Accounting notes. Owner earnings are operating cash flow minus the working-capital movements (including the deferred revenue and refund-liability swings from the partnerships), minus stock compensation, minus maintenance capital spending (very small here, $0.04 million in 2025). Interest earned on the company's cash is included in operating cash flow. The four-year median of owner earnings for 2022 through 2025 is about minus $1.45 per share; the window starts after the GSK agreement took effect, and 2021 was excluded because it is distorted by the one-time GSK upfront payment. Because the median is negative, we did not use it to value the shares; the value comes from the cash, as described above. Margin-of-safety price: $0.20 per share. This is well under the $0.47 base case because the value is a shrinking pile of cash owned by a company that plans to keep spending it, the bear case is near zero, and the potential upside (a nivisnebart success) is something we cannot credit.
