Annexon, Inc. (ANNX) stock intrinsic value fair value estimate & owner earnings analysis

Margin of safety$0.00 ComplexityHigh Updated
Business condition attached to the margin of safety Tanruprubart (Guillain-Barre Syndrome) is approved by the FDA and the company is generating positive owner earnings from product sales.
Annexon is a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing drugs that block C1q, the first step of the classical complement pathway of the immune system. It has two late-stage programs: tanruprubart, aimed at its first potential approval in Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), a serious nerve condition with no approved therapy in the United States, and vonaprument, being developed for geographic atrophy, an advanced form of dry age-related macular degeneration. The company says it plans to submit a marketing application (BLA) for tanruprubart in 2026 and filed a European application in January 2026. It has no approved products and has never had revenue from product sales. What the numbers show. The company burns cash rather than earning it. Operating cash outflow was about $186 million in 2025, $118 million in 2024, $121 million in 2023, $116 million in 2022 and $106 million in 2021. After removing working-capital timing effects and treating stock compensation ($16 million in 2025) as a real cost, our owner-earnings measure was a loss of about $1.39 per share in 2025, $1.09 in 2024, $1.79 in 2023, $2.69 in 2022 and $3.29 in 2021. Capital spending is negligible. Net loss for 2025 was $206.7 million. The annual report states existing cash and short-term investments (about $238 million) should fund operations into the second half of 2027, and that substantial additional financing will be required. Raising that money has repeatedly meant issuing new shares: the diluted share count grew from about 38 million in 2021 to about 155 million in 2025 and about 201 million in the second quarter of 2026. What each case assumes. We value only earning power that is already secured or proven. Annexon has no contracted revenue, no approved product and no track record of profitable operations. A future approval of tanruprubart, a positive pivotal result for vonaprument, or later commercial sales are plausible but have not happened, so under our approach they carry no value today. All three cases are therefore worth $0 per share: the bear case because the company continues to burn cash and must keep selling shares to fund itself, the base case because nothing evidenced turns those losses into owner earnings, and the bull case because it would depend on regulatory approval and commercial success that have not yet occurred. Cash held on the balance sheet is not added in, because this method values the earnings stream, and that stream is currently negative. The company does not appear to owe more than it is worth; it has no debt-driven shortfall, but its cash burn consumes value each year. What would change this view. An FDA approval of tanruprubart, followed by evidence of product sales that exceed operating costs, would give us something to value. Existing holders should note that a positive clinical outcome could still be worth a lot to the shares; that upside is simply speculative rather than evidenced, and we do not put a price on it. The main risk to this view is that we are ignoring a real chance of a valuable approval; the main risk to holders is further dilution before any profits arrive. Limits of this analysis. The most recent quarterly report (June 2026) was used only for the share count and cash-flow trend; it showed continued losses (about $99 million net loss in the first half of 2026).
