Business condition attached to the margin of safety The pending Federal Circuit appeal over NUPLAZID's newer patents (brought by two generic challengers) is resolved in ACADIA's favor, or a further settlement pushes out generic-entry dates; briefing closed in December 2025.
ACADIA Pharmaceuticals sells two approved medicines: NUPLAZID, for hallucinations and delusions associated with Parkinson's disease psychosis, on the market since 2016 and generating $680 million of net sales in 2025; and DAYBUE, the first and only approved treatment for Rett syndrome, launched in March 2023 and generating $391 million in 2025. Together the company produced just over $1.07 billion of revenue in 2025 and, for the first time in its history, meaningful and growing cash generation. We measured what the business actually generates in cash after removing non-cash accounting items, stock-based compensation, and the swings that quarter-to-quarter working capital creates, and after covering the modest equipment spending the business needs (ACADIA owns no manufacturing plants, so capital spending is a rounding error against revenue). On that basis, per-share owner earnings were roughly $0.52 in 2024 and $0.84 in 2025, up from a loss in DAYBUE's 2023 launch year. We anchored our estimate on the middle of these three post-launch years rather than either the loss-making launch year or 2025, whose total was boosted by a large, likely partly temporary, cash drag from inventory and receivables growing alongside sales. The single biggest question for ACADIA's value is how long NUPLAZID keeps its pricing power. Its core compound patent runs to 2030. A family of newer, narrower patents covering its tablet and capsule formulations run to 2037 and 2038, and ACADIA has already won at the trial-court level (and, for one challenger, on appeal) against generic filers; two other companies have separately agreed not to launch generics before 2036 and 2038. However, two remaining challengers have appealed their losses to the Federal Circuit, and that appeal is still pending as of this filing -- if it goes against ACADIA, generic competition could arrive years earlier than the settlements imply. DAYBUE's key Rett-syndrome patent runs to 2032, potentially to 2036 with a pending extension request, so it does not face the same near-term risk. Two accounting items are worth flagging because they inflated reported profit without reflecting the ongoing business: in 2024, ACADIA booked a $146.5 million one-time gain from selling a priority review voucher earned when DAYBUE was approved; in 2025, a $249.9 million non-cash tax benefit (a reversal of a prior tax-asset writedown) pushed net income well above the cash actually generated. Neither affects the cash-flow-based owner earnings above, which is exactly why we build from cash flow rather than reported net income. Our base case assumes NUPLAZID keeps growing at a decelerating pace over the next several years -- broadly consistent with management's own target of $1 billion of NUPLAZID sales by 2028 -- before growth flattens and then gradually declines as patent protection weakens through the early-to-mid 2030s. DAYBUE growth decelerates from 2025's pace as the initial wave of diagnosed patients is treated, helped somewhat by international launches (Canada is already approved; a European regulatory review has not gone smoothly so far) and a new oral powder formulation launched in early 2026. We do not assume any of ACADIA's early-stage pipeline candidates -- including its next-generation psychosis drug remlifanserin, still in mid-stage trials -- reach the market within the next decade; if one does, that is unpriced upside. Beyond the ten-year forecast, we assume NUPLAZID's earnings power fades substantially as its remaining patents expire between 2036 and 2038, leaving a smaller, DAYBUE- and pipeline-anchored business as ACADIA's enduring value. On these assumptions we estimate the shares are worth around $16 today. Our bear case assumes the pending patent appeal goes against ACADIA, generic NUPLAZID competition arrives years sooner than current settlements contemplate (we assume around 2028), and DAYBUE's growth also falls short. In that world we estimate the shares are worth around $6.50 -- the company would still be solidly profitable on DAYBUE alone, just far smaller than the combined business implies today. Our bull case assumes ACADIA wins its remaining litigation outright, NUPLAZID's protection effectively holds to the settled 2036-2038 dates, NUPLAZID sales grow faster than management's own target, DAYBUE succeeds internationally including in Europe, and the pipeline delivers at least a partial successor to NUPLAZID by the time its protection eventually lapses. In that world we estimate the shares are worth around $33.50. Because so much of the range between these cases depends on a specific, pending piece of litigation rather than ordinary business execution, a wider-than-usual margin of safety is appropriate -- on that basis the margin-of-safety price is in the area of $9.30 per share. One item we could not fully reconcile from the filings: in a handful of older years, the reported operating cash flow differs from what we could independently rebuild from the disclosed reconciliation lines by roughly 1-2%, most likely rounding or minor items not separately broken out. These gaps are too small to affect the estimates above.
