Vicor designs and makes power conversion modules at its own plant in Andover, Massachusetts. Advanced Products (the proprietary Factorized Power Architecture and VI Chip modules that deliver power inside AI and data-center servers, aerospace, defense and vehicles) were 61% of 2025 revenue; Brick Products (more conventional modules for defense, industrial and rail customers) are the rest. Since 2023 a second earnings stream has grown beside the product business: royalties from companies licensing Vicor's patents, paid as a percentage of the licensees' sales ($15.9 million in 2023, $46.6 million in 2024, $57.4 million in 2025, and $45.4 million in the first half of 2026 alone). Vicor has no borrowings. The founder controls the vote through a ten-vote second class of stock, so outside shareholders own the cash flows but have little say over how they are used. What changed since our last review: the $28.6 million SynQor patent judgment was paid in the first quarter of 2026 and is now behind the company, cash rose to $453.6 million at June 30, 2026, twelve-month order backlog reached $380 million (it was $176.9 million at the end of 2025 and was flat through all of 2025), and second-quarter revenue reached $143.4 million, of which $30.4 million was royalties. Our previous figures were built on a different basis and are not comparable. How we measure earning power. We count cash from operations, remove swings in receivables, inventory and payables, charge stock compensation as a real cost, and deduct the capital spending needed to stay in business (not the part that adds capacity). We exclude the one-time $45 million patent settlement received in 2025 and the interest earned on the cash pile, because the cash is counted separately. On that basis the 2023-2025 median is about $0.69 per share a year, the business as it stood before the recent step-up. The ten-year record is uneven: negative in 2016, 2017 and 2022, when $140 million of plant spending in 2020-2022 ran far ahead of demand. We start the base case above that median because two straight quarters of results and a doubled backlog support a higher level: $380 million of orders scheduled to ship over the next twelve months is already booked, and the existing plant produced $112.9 million of product revenue in the second quarter. Last year's actual growth was large, but largely settlement-driven; the base case assumes no further growth beyond the level the backlog and the current run-rate support. Backlog is subject to customer scheduling and cancellation terms, and only about two quarters of it have been demonstrated, so we give it no credit for growth after the first year. Base case. Product revenue of $430 million a year at a 46% product gross margin (44-49% in 2023-2025; 46.7% in the latest quarter), royalties of $65 million (below the $82 million of the last four quarters, above 2025), operating costs of $190 million. That leaves about $73 million a year before tax, roughly $1.53 per share. Federal loss carryforwards of $43 million and research credits of $16.5 million shelter the first two years of tax; after that we assume an 18% cash tax rate. We hold that level flat for ten years and then fade it to zero over the following ten, since nothing we can document sustains it beyond what the patent portfolio (128 U.S. patents expiring 2026-2043) and a four-decade record of new product generations support. We do not credit AI-driven growth, a second fabrication plant (management says only that it is taking steps toward one), or new products. Business worth about $586 million, no debt, plus $414 million of cash beyond operating needs: about $20.94 per share. Bear case. The company's own record gives the downturn: revenue fell 9% in 2016, 10% in 2019 and 11% in 2024, and the Advanced Products business depends on a small number of large customers. We assume backlog ships in year one at 44% product margin with $50 million of royalties, then product revenue drops to $320 million at a 42% margin with royalties at $40 million for two years, recovering only to $350 million (the 2025 level) and $50 million of royalties. In parallel, the company repeats the 2020-2022 pattern: about $200 million spent on a second plant that adds no cash earnings. Business worth about negative $51 million (the plant spending exceeds what the weakened operations earn), no debt, plus $414 million of cash: about $7.59 per share. A larger plant outlay of $350 million would cut this to about $4.95. Bull case. The existing plant keeps running at the second-quarter pace: $500 million of product revenue at a 48.5% margin (2023 reached 48.6%), $95 million of royalties (the first-half 2026 pace), costs of $200 million, about $137 million a year before tax, held flat for ten years and then faded. Business worth about $1,106 million, no debt, plus $414 million of cash: about $31.85 per share. Still no credit for a new plant or further market growth. If we are wrong. The three things most likely to be wrong are royalty durability, product margin and volume. Royalties at $45 million instead of $65 million lowers the base to about $17.60; a 42% product margin to about $18.00; product revenue of $380 million to about $17.10; all three together to about $11.10. The worst plausible outcomes that no case models are a plant far larger than $200 million with little demand behind it, or loss of a major Advanced Products customer; with no debt the business survives either, but the cash would be heavily drawn down. Margin-of-safety price. We are sure of the next twelve months and much less sure of the years after, and the price assumes a three-to-five-year holding period for the business to prove itself through a slowdown; we have not credited any dividend, so the return has to come from value built inside the company. The margin-of-safety price is about $8.50 a share, a price covered by the roughly $8.67 per share of excess cash alone: the base case value is far above that price, and the bear case value is roughly a tenth below it. A higher price would include royalties and AI demand that the filings do not yet show as lasting, and founder-directed plant spending that cannot be ruled out. Sales geography
United States (about half of sales, spread across the Northeast, West, South and Midwest), plus export sales of about 51% to the Asia Pacific region including the People's Republic of China, and to Europe
Historical growth strategy
Organic, technology-led growth: in-house research into proprietary power-conversion architectures (Factorized Power Architecture, VI Chip), manufactured in the company's own plant in Andover, Massachusetts, sold first to market-leading innovators (data-center, aerospace, defense) and then to larger OEM customers; capacity has been built ahead of demand (2020-2022), and since 2023 patents have been enforced in court and licensed for royalties. Growth has not come from acquisitions.
Chart analysis
Over the last two months the chart shows a violent, momentum-driven advance: from a low near $172 on September 2 to an intraday high of $331 on October 1, almost doubling in a month, with a series of upward gaps on heavy volume (September 17 and 22, then October 1). A chartist would call this a strong uptrend and breakout, but also a parabolic, overextended move: the stock is far above its short and medium-term moving averages and momentum gauges would be deeply overbought. The October 7 drop of about 5.5% to roughly $283 from the October 1 close near $309 could be the first sign of a blow-off top or just a normal pullback. Key levels to watch are resistance at the $331 high, and support in the gap areas near $268 (September 22) and $216-217 (mid-September and August). A close below the $268 gap would suggest the move is unwinding toward the $217 area; holding it would keep the uptrend intact.
