Tripadvisor earns money from three businesses: Experiences (Viator, the tours-and-activities booking marketplace, plus experience sales on the Tripadvisor site), Hotels and Other (hotel comparison-shopping referral fees, display advertising and B2B), and TheFork (restaurant reservations, mainly in Europe). We value the company on what is left for shareholders after operating cash costs, after stock compensation, after the ordinary swings in working capital, and after the part of capital spending needed just to stay in business. On that basis, owner earnings were about $1.30 per share in 2018 and 2019, negative in 2020 and 2021 (the pandemic), and then $0.57, $0.27, $0.15 and $0.59 per share in 2022 through 2025. We use the median of 2022-2025, about $0.42 per share, as the normal level, because the pre-2020 business had no meaningful debt and a stronger hotel comparison-shopping franchise; the pandemic years are excluded as distorted. Stock compensation is large ($108 million in 2025, more than the entire owner-earnings figure) and is treated as a real cost. In 2025 owner earnings rose sharply from a very low 2024 base (which was depressed by a $75 million income-tax cash outflow, though such swings are stripped out of our working-capital adjustment), and our base case does not extrapolate that rebound: year one assumes no growth. What is growing and what is not. Viator bookings grew 16% in 2025 (22.9 million) and 12% in 2024, and Experiences revenue rose $84 million in 2025. TheFork revenue grew 22% to $220.8 million. Against that, Hotels and Other revenue fell 8% in 2025 and 9% in 2024 (to $750 million), because lower free and paid traffic reduced hotel referral clicks and display advertising, and management has ended vacation rentals, flights and rental cars offerings. Total revenue rose only 3% in 2025 to $1,891 million. The most recent quarterly report shows first-half 2026 revenue of $768 million versus $829 million a year earlier, a decline of about 7%, so the drop in hotel referrals is currently outweighing Experiences growth. In November 2025 the company began a restructuring with at least $85 million of annualized gross cost savings; we credit no growth from it beyond the fact that it is already under way and stock compensation has fallen in 2026 (first-half $35 million versus $52 million). Base case: owner earnings stay at about $0.42 per share for ten years, with Experiences and TheFork growth offset by the demonstrated decline in hotel referrals, and then decline about 3% a year afterward as the hotel-referral business keeps shrinking. That is worth about $5.60 per share. We do not credit further Viator growth even though bookings are rising, because that depends on the market and share gains continuing, which is not yet secured. Bear case: hotel traffic keeps falling at the recent 8-9% annual pace, the company's debt (about $831 million of Term Loan B carrying value due in 2031, on top of the $345 million convertible notes due April 2026 that management planned to repay from cash) absorbs cash interest of about $59 million a year, and owner earnings fall back to the 2024 level of about $0.15 per share and decline 5% a year. Worth about $1.30 per share. The company does not appear to owe more than it is worth in this case. Bull case: Experiences and TheFork keep growing at recent rates, enough to offset the hotel decline, and half of the announced cost savings reach owner earnings, lifting them to about $0.69 per share, growing 3% a year for ten years and then declining 1.5% a year. Worth about $12.70 per share. We do not subtract debt separately; interest is already deducted in the cash flows. A wide margin of safety is warranted here: earnings are thin relative to stock compensation, small changes in cost or traffic swing the result, and the share count has fallen from about 145 million to about 118 million after the 2025 buyback linked to the Liberty TripAdvisor merger, a benefit not credited beyond the normal level. What would make this wrong: hotel referral revenue stabilising (upside) or search and AI traffic changes accelerating the decline in hotel and display revenue faster than Viator can grow (downside). Note: the latest quarterly report's text could not be searched, so 2026 figures come from the reported financial data only.
