TransDigm designs and manufactures highly engineered components used across commercial and military aircraft - actuation systems, ignition and engine parts, cockpit security devices, and power and control components. Roughly 90% of the company's sales come from proprietary products, most of which are the only qualified source for the specific part on a given aircraft platform. That position, combined with certification barriers that make it costly for airlines or the military to qualify an alternate supplier, is the core of the business's pricing power, and it shows up in results: revenue has grown from about $3.5 billion in fiscal 2017 to $8.8 billion in fiscal 2025, split between original-equipment sales to Boeing and Airbus, a high-margin recurring aftermarket (replacement parts for the installed fleet), and defense. Owner earnings - operating cash flow after removing the effect of working-capital swings, stock compensation, and the capital spending needed just to maintain the existing business - were normalized using the six fiscal years from 2020 through 2025, a period that spans the COVID-19 collapse in air travel through the current recovery. That gives a fuller picture than the most recent year alone, which was unusually flattered by a large build in inventory and receivables that funded this year's production surge. The resulting per-share figure is well below what the most recent year alone would suggest, and that gap is explained in the case discussion below rather than smoothed over. The bear case assumes owner earnings grow only about 1% a year. Two things support this: interest expense jumped from $1.25 billion to $1.53 billion in fiscal 2025 after the company borrowed to fund a $90-per-share special dividend (on top of a $75-per-share dividend the year before), and in the most recent nine months, revenue grew 18% year over year while net income grew only about 4% - the debt load is already eating into the growth investors see at the top line. Separately, the company has flagged that a meaningful share of its original-equipment sales depends on Boeing and Airbus production schedules, and that its government contracts can be fixed-price (with cost-overrun risk borne by the company) and cancelable for convenience. None of this points to a collapse - it points to a business whose growth is increasingly consumed by debt service. The base case assumes 8% owner-earnings growth in the coming year, below the roughly 11% actual growth achieved in fiscal 2025, easing toward a mid-single-digit rate over the following several years and holding flat in real terms further out - no further compounding is assumed beyond what the record supports. The bull case assumes the recent growth trajectory persists closer to double digits through the ten-year forecast, reflecting continued execution of the proprietary-aftermarket model and the disciplined bolt-on acquisitions the company has funded from its own cash flow for years. On this basis, the shares appear meaningfully overvalued relative to what a conservative, cash-based estimate of the business supports. The company would need to sustain unusually strong growth with no further deterioration from its debt load for the current valuation to be justified. The margin-of-safety price sits at a large discount to the base-case estimate to reflect the leverage risk, given how much of fiscal 2025's cash flow now goes to interest rather than to the owners. What could not be fully reconciled from the filings: the exact revenue split across commercial OEM, commercial aftermarket, and defense was not disclosed at the segment level in the current filing, so that mix is described qualitatively rather than numerically.
