Steel Dynamics is a low-cost electric-arc-furnace (EAF) steel producer - flat-rolled, structural, rail, and engineered bar products - paired with one of North America's largest metals recycling operations, which supplies scrap feedstock to its own mills as well as third parties. Since 2021 the company has substantially expanded its footprint with a new flat-roll steel mill in Sinton, Texas, and since 2023 it has been building a second growth platform in recycled aluminum flat-rolled products (Aluminum Dynamics, in Columbus, Mississippi, plus a Mexican slab facility) aimed at the beverage-can and automotive-sheet markets. As of the most recent fiscal year, aluminum still made up only about 2% of consolidated sales, so most of the earnings potential of that multi-year investment still lies ahead as the mill continues ramping toward full production. We value the company on owner earnings - operating cash flow after stripping out the swings caused by working-capital timing and equity compensation, and after deducting only the capital spending needed to sustain the existing asset base (separating that from the discretionary spending tied to building the Sinton and aluminum platforms). Because steel is a highly cyclical, capital-intensive commodity business, we anchor the valuation on the median of the last ten fiscal years (2016-2025) rather than any single year, so the figure reflects a full cycle - including the historic 2021-2022 price surge and the softer 2016, 2019-2020 and 2023-2024 periods - rather than a peak or a trough. A mechanical side-effect of separating maintenance from growth capital spending is that in years when steel prices fell at the same time the company was pouring capital into the Sinton or aluminum build-outs (2019-2020 and 2023-2024), essentially all of that spending gets counted as 'maintenance,' which understates true sustainable earnings in those specific years. We have flagged this plainly rather than overriding the formula, and using a ten-year median (rather than an average, and rather than the most recent year) is a deliberate choice to avoid letting any single distorted year set the valuation. On that basis, normalized owner earnings run at roughly $5 per share. In our base case, that level grows at a mid-to-high single-digit rate over the next few years as the aluminum mill approaches full production (already-built, high-return assets whose contribution is still largely in front of the company, not behind it), before settling into a low single-digit rate that we think is appropriate for a mature, price-competitive commodity industry over the following decade. Beyond that, because the company's furnaces and mills are long-lived assets that renew themselves through the maintenance spending already charged against earnings, we treat the business as a going concern rather than assuming it winds down, but we assume no further real per-share growth in perpetuity, since steel does not have durable pricing power beyond a cost advantage. That combination of a ten-year forecast plus a flat perpetuity produces a base-case value of roughly $118 per share, discounted at a flat 6% rate applied to every company we analyze. Our bear case reflects the two biggest business-specific risks: (1) persistent industry-wide oversupply as multiple competitors have also been adding EAF capacity in recent years, keeping domestic steel spreads compressed for an extended stretch rather than just one bad year, and (2) the aluminum platform failing to reach its targeted returns - a real risk given it is a newer market for the company, competing for automotive and can-sheet business against long-established rolling mills. In that scenario we hold owner earnings near the low end of the company's clean historical range with a flat-to-slightly-declining trajectory, which values the shares at roughly $32. Our bull case assumes the aluminum platform reaches full contracted utilization at attractive margins (already under construction, not speculative), that the company's structural low-cost advantage over older integrated competitors continues to support share gains, and that Steel Dynamics continues its long-standing practice of shrinking its share count through buybacks (diluted shares outstanding have fallen by roughly 40% over the past decade), which amplifies per-share earnings growth. That case is worth roughly $222 per share. Given how wide that range is - a genuine reflection of this being a cyclical, commodity-exposed business layered with execution risk on a still-ramping new product line, not a lack of research - the margin-of-safety price carries a large margin of safety, at or below approximately $59 per share, roughly half of our base-case estimate. We did not find anything in the filings that raises going-concern, delisting, or similar structural concerns, and cash flow reconciled cleanly to net income, depreciation, working-capital changes and capital spending with no unexplained gap.
