Sensata makes sensors and electrical protection devices that sit inside other companies' products. About 57% of 2025 revenue came from automotive (pressure and temperature sensors, tire pressure monitoring, and high-voltage contactors and fuses for electric-vehicle battery packs); about 22% from aerospace, defense and commercial equipment such as trucks, construction and agriculture machinery; and about 21% from industrial customers (heating and cooling equipment, appliances, energy storage). Parts are designed into a vehicle or appliance platform and are rarely swapped during that platform's life, which is the source of the company's staying power. What the numbers show. We measure owner earnings as operating cash flow, less the swing in working capital, less stock-based compensation, less the capital spending needed just to keep the plants running. On that basis Sensata has earned between roughly $2.65 and $3.39 per share in every year since 2021, and about $2.7 to $3.0 in most years since 2017; the one exception was the 2020 pandemic year at $1.77. The 2021 to 2025 figures are $3.39, $2.65, $2.65, $2.71 and $2.99. We anchor on the median of 2021 to 2025, about $2.71 per share, because 2021 was when the company was reshaped by a run of acquisitions (Dynapower, Xirgo, Spear, and others), and it has since sold its Insights business and other pieces. Revenue has been roughly flat at $3.7 billion to $4.1 billion over those years, so there is no growth trend to extrapolate. Owner earnings rose about 10% in 2025 versus 2024; we assume no growth in the first year of the base case, because the 2025 gain came from tighter capital spending and a lower share count rather than a step up in sales (revenue fell about 6%). Six-month 2026 results show revenue up about 4% and operating cash flow of $332.5 million versus $260.1 million a year earlier, with lower capital spending. That is encouraging, but two quarters is not enough to move the level we use. Accounting judgements. Sensata records large non-cash charges: goodwill write-downs of $322 million in 2023, $150 million in 2024 and $226 million in 2025, plus intangible amortization that has fallen from $174 million to $80 million. These do not consume cash and are correctly excluded from owner earnings. But three consecutive write-downs show that some of the acquisitions did not earn what was paid for, and we treat that as a reason for caution in the bear case, not as a reason to alter the earnings level. Stock compensation ($25 million to $39 million a year) is deducted as a real cost. Capital spending is treated as maintenance except for a small growth allowance in years when revenue rose. Debt is not deducted from value because interest is already paid out of operating cash flow; instead it weighs on the bear case. Base case: about $36 per share. Owner earnings stay at about $2.71 a share for ten years, and then fade by 3% a year. We credit no growth. Sensor content growth, electric-vehicle contactors, data-center cooling and energy-storage wins are plausible, but none is contracted or a repeated multi-year pattern in the results, so they are left out. What is credited is persistence: nine years of results in a narrow band through a pandemic, supported by long platform design-in cycles. We fade after year ten because the gasoline-engine sensor base will erode over time and there is no evidence yet that replacement products fully offset that. Bear case: about $16 per share. Owner earnings drop to the 2020 trough level of about $1.80 and then decline 5% a year. This reflects automotive being the majority of sales, a repeat of the 2020 demand collapse, continued erosion of engine-related content, and roughly $2.85 billion of senior notes (maturing 2029 to 2032, none nearer, no borrowings on the revolver) whose interest is a fixed claim on a shrinking cash flow. It also reflects the record of write-downs on acquired businesses. Bull case: about $45 per share. Owner earnings run at about $3.20 a share, between the 2025 result of $2.99 and the 2021 peak of $3.39, both already achieved, and then fade 2% a year after year ten. This assumes lower capital spending (as in the first half of 2026) and the current earnings level hold. We did not build a bull case on data-center or energy-storage demand because it has not yet appeared in results. What could make this wrong. If the gasoline-engine sensor decline outpaces electrification content, the fade would start sooner and be steeper than we assume. On the other side, the 2025 result already shows that earnings can rise on flat revenue, so our base may be conservative if capital spending stays near $130 million. Cash flow depends on working capital, which swung from a $160 million use of cash in 2023 to a $26 million source in 2025; we removed those swings, but a long-lasting inventory or receivables problem would reduce true earning power. The margin-of-safety price is about $22 a share, which leaves a wide cushion against the bear case for a cyclical, leveraged automotive supplier.
