SS&C Technologies sells software and outsourced back-office services to investment managers, hedge funds, private equity funds, banks, insurers and healthcare payers. Its biggest engines are fund administration and accounting (GlobeOp), trading and portfolio software (Eze, Advent, Black Diamond), transfer-agency and investor servicing (DST, Calastone) and pharmacy-claims and health processing. The company reports more than 95% average revenue retention over the last five years, and most revenue is recurring and embedded in clients' daily operations. How we measured earnings. We start from operating cash flow and remove the swing in working capital, then deduct stock compensation in full (about $258M in 2025) and deduct the cost of keeping the platform current. SS&C spends heavily on capitalized software ($222M in 2025) in addition to property and equipment ($81M), and we treated all of it as an ongoing cost except a small slice tied to revenue growth. On that basis owner earnings were about $1.27B in 2025 ($5.04 a share), $1.13B in 2024, $0.91B in 2023, $1.02B in 2022 and $1.25B in 2021. Amortization of acquired intangibles (about $700M of total D&A a year) is a non-cash cost of past deals and is not charged again; instead the wasting nature of acquired assets is reflected in the modest growth and the bear case. Earnings are measured from 2019 onward, after the 2018 DST acquisition changed the business. We anchored on the middle of the last five years, about $1.13B, or about $4.64 per share on the roughly 243M shares outstanding after buybacks reported in mid-2026. 2025 ($5.04) was above that anchor partly because it included only about 2.5 months of Calastone and we did not lift the base level for it. Growth check. Owner earnings grew about 13% in 2025, but part of that was working-capital timing and a rise in operating cash flow that we are not extrapolating. Our base case assumes 5% in year 1, below that trailing rate. The 5% rests on something already done: Calastone, purchased for $1,030M in October 2025, was included for under three months of 2025 and will be in the numbers for all of 2026. First-half 2026 revenue was up about 9.6% and operating cash flow about 11% versus the prior-year half, consistent with that. After that we credit about 3% a year, tapering to 2%. The evidence is a long record: total owner earnings grew about 3.5% a year from 2019 to 2025 through steady tuck-in acquisitions (Battea, FPS Trust, Curo, Calastone) and pricing on sticky contracts, funded largely from operating cash. We do not credit share gains, new products, margin expansion or larger transformational deals. Base case (about $83 a share). Owner earnings start at about $4.64 a share, grow 5% in year 1, about 3% a year through year 8 and 2% in years 9 and 10 (about $6.17 by year 10). We then keep earnings flat for another ten years, because clients have renewed at more than 95% for years and the required software spending is already deducted, and then fade at 5% a year, which is the rate of client attrition implied by the retention record. Discounted at 6%. Bear case (about $48 a share). The company carries $7.47B of debt, of which $4.72B floats with interest rates, and a 5.5% senior note comes due in 2027 and must be refinanced. A 1-percentage-point rise in rates costs about $47M pre-tax a year. In the bear case earnings sit at 2023 levels (a year in which cash flow was squeezed by $106M of liability paydowns and heavier software spend), less about $50M for higher refinancing costs, about $3.54 a share; they grow only 1% a year for ten years (price increases with no acquisitions), then decline 5% a year. We include a serial-acquirer risk here: SS&C has paid roughly $1B or more for several recent deals, and acquired intangibles wear out. The bear case does not assume a loss of any named customer, since none is disclosed in the filings. Bull case (about $108 a share). Earnings hold at the 2025 level of about $5.24 a share (on current shares) and grow 4.5% a year for ten years, equal to the pace of per-share owner-earnings growth since 2019 (about 4%), reflecting continued tuck-in deals and Calastone integration; then flat for ten years and a 5% fade. The bull case does not rely on a market recovery or new products. Margin-of-safety price and what could make this wrong. The margin-of-safety price is near $32, roughly a one-third discount to the bear case and well under half of the base value. That is a large cushion because the business is levered, acquires other companies regularly, and its stock compensation and capitalized software spending are climbing (both are up about 60% since 2022). The main risk to this view is that some of the roughly $700M a year of amortization signals assets that lose value faster than we assume, or that clients move fund administration in-house or to competitors more quickly than the 95% retention record suggests. Not fully reconciled: the earliest years (2016-2018) have fewer tagged working-capital lines, so those older figures are less reliable and were not used for the anchor. Figures for the first half of 2026 come from the company's 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 (cash flow, revenue, share count only).
