Business condition attached to the margin of safety Owner earnings after stock-based compensation must turn positive and stay positive for at least two consecutive fiscal years, showing that the improvement since 2023 has carried through to break-even.
Snap owns Snapchat and sells advertising (plus a growing set of subscription and other products) against its audience. Revenue reached $5.93 billion in 2025, up from $5.36 billion in 2024 and $4.61 billion in 2023. Of 2025 revenue, $3.47 billion was billed to North America customers, $1.09 billion to Europe and $1.37 billion to the rest of the world. How we measure earnings. We start from operating cash flow, remove the swings from working capital, and then subtract stock-based compensation as a real cost, along with the capital spending needed just to stand still. For Snap this matters a great deal: operating cash flow was $656 million in 2025, but the company also paid its people roughly $1.02 billion in stock. After that cost and about $202 million of maintenance capital spending, owner earnings were about negative $523 million, or negative $0.31 per share. The trend is improving: negative $0.84 per share in 2023, negative $0.43 in 2024, negative $0.31 in 2025. Cash flow rose from $247 million to $413 million to $656 million over those years, and stock compensation fell from $1.32 billion to $1.02 billion. The company has never produced positive owner earnings on this basis in any year from 2019 through 2025. We used 2022 to 2025, the period since the advertising slowdown, as the reference window; the median is about negative $0.61 per share. Last year owner earnings improved by about 28 percent (the loss narrowed from $717 million to $523 million); our base case does not assume that pace continues. The three cases. Bear (worth $0 per share): stock compensation stays near $1 billion and cash flow stops improving, so the business keeps losing roughly $0.3 per share each year after paying for its people in stock. On top of that, Snap has about $3.5 billion of senior and convertible notes maturing between 2026 and 2034 that would have to be refinanced or converted. On that evidence, there is no value left for shareholders. We did not push the number below zero because shareholders' losses are limited to their investment. Base (worth $0 per share): We credit only what is already in the bag. Revenue growth and cost discipline are real but depend on advertising demand and management choices, which do not meet our standard for secured or repeatable growth. A base case that keeps 2025 owner earnings flat is negative every year, and even a modest continued improvement of about $100 million a year only gets the business to roughly break-even by around 2030, which by itself does not add up to positive value. We therefore value the shares at $0 on the evidence we can name today, which means the current business has not yet demonstrated that it earns more than it costs once stock pay is counted. Bull (worth $3.37 per share): The demonstrated three-year record continues, with owner earnings improving about $150 million a year (below the roughly $195 million achieved in 2025 and well below the 2024 gain) for ten years, reaching roughly positive $1.0 billion a year, and then holding at that level for a further ten years before we assume nothing further. This is what happens if the pattern of cash flow rising while stock compensation falls simply continues. What would make this wrong. On the upside, faster stock-compensation cuts or a sustained subscription and advertising ramp would move value well above the bull case. On the downside, a weakening advertising market or renewed heavy stock grants would keep the losses going. We could not reconcile every working-capital line to the company's own subtotals, so we used the individual line items in the cash flow statement. Our earliest years use a 2018 revenue figure to estimate growth spending, which affects only 2019. Margin-of-safety price. Because the base case is worth nothing on today's evidence, price alone is not enough. The margin-of-safety price of about $1.00 per share applies only once owner earnings after stock compensation turn positive and stay positive for two consecutive years, because at that point the shares would have crossed from an unproven business into one with a visible earnings stream, and the wide margin of safety reflects the leverage and the volatility of advertising demand.
