SCI Engineered Materials makes ceramic and metal sputtering targets and related advanced materials used in physical vapor deposition (PVD) coating, from a single 32,000 square foot plant in Columbus, Ohio. More than 99% of its 2025 revenue came from the PVD industry, and the business depends heavily on very few customers: the two largest accounted for 66% and 18% of 2025 revenue (74% and 14% in 2024), and the top two together were 84% and 88% of revenue in 2025 and 2024. The business. Revenue peaked at $28.0 million in 2023, then fell to $22.9 million in 2024 and $19.6 million in 2025. The first half of 2026 reversed that sharply: revenue was $17.6 million versus $7.1 million a year earlier, gross profit $4.3 million versus $2.2 million, operating income $1.9 million versus $0.7 million and net income $1.6 million versus $0.7 million. Part of the revenue increase reflects a higher price for a key raw material, which is why gross margin was lower (24.4% versus 31.4%) even as gross profit dollars doubled. Customers had also prepaid: customer deposits were $4.5 million at June 30, 2026, against $0.8 million at year-end 2025. Order backlog, however, was only $2.6 million at December 31, 2025, and management describes demand as heavily weighted to purchases placed within the quarter, so visibility is short. Equipment for a new spherical powder line (aerospace, defense and medical uses) is on order for installation in the second half of 2026; it has no revenue history yet, so we give it no value. How we measured earning power. We take cash from operations, remove the swings in inventory, receivables, payables and customer deposits (which were large: inventories and deposits moved by several million dollars in both directions in 2023 to 2025), subtract stock compensation, and subtract the capital spending needed to keep the plant running. Because revenue fell in 2024 and 2025, all of the capital spending in those years is treated as maintenance, including 2025 equipment purchases of $1.0 million, about 2.2 times depreciation; if part of that was really expansion, earning power is understated. We then remove the after-tax interest the company earns on its cash and securities ($449,000 pre-tax in 2025), because the cash itself is valued separately below, and we remove $561,000 of one-time Employee Retention Credits recorded in 2021. On that basis business earnings per share were about $0.26 in 2021, $0.58 in 2022, $0.51 in 2023, $0.35 in 2024 and $0.24 in 2025. From 2016 to 2019, when revenue was $5.5 million to $13.0 million, they ranged from about negative $0.08 to $0.25. We use the 2021 to 2025 median, $0.35 per share, as the normal level: the business has operated at its current scale only since 2021, and that window contains both the 2022 and 2023 high and the 2025 low. We do not lift the level for the first half of 2026 alone; it is the growth path, not the base, that reflects it. Earning power fell about 30% in 2025 (from $0.35 to $0.24). Our base case assumes $0.45 over the next twelve months, higher than that trailing decline, because the June 30, 2026 quarterly report shows first-half 2026 operating income of $1.9 million (roughly $0.33 per share after tax for the half) and $4.5 million of customer deposits against orders in progress. Cash. The company has no borrowings. Cash and securities were $11.3 million at year-end 2025 ($7.9 million cash, $0.3 million short-term and $3.1 million long-term securities), or about $2.54 per share on 4.45 million diluted shares. They were $13.3 million at June 30, 2026, but roughly $3.7 million of that increase in the period was customer prepayments for work still to be delivered, so we credit only the year-end 2025 balance. The $1.1 million operating lease is already paid for out of operating cash flow and is not subtracted again. The company has never paid a dividend; since late 2025 it has repurchased shares ($767,500 held in treasury at June 30, 2026). Bear case: $3.51 per share. The business is worth $0.97 per share, the company owes nothing, and net cash adds $2.54. The story is the largest customer pulling back, as the company's own record shows can happen: earning power fell about 58% from 2022 to 2025, and in 2016 to 2019 it was near break-even at lower revenue. We assume $0.20 over the next twelve months while prepaid orders ship, then two years at zero as volumes drop and the plant's fixed costs go uncovered, then $0.10 a year (the 2016 to 2019 median) for seven years, then a 10% annual decline. Earning power never turns negative for long, so no financing is required. We leave out any recovery in this case. Base case: $6.94 per share. The business is worth $4.40, the company owes nothing, and net cash adds $2.54. Earning power is $0.45 over the next twelve months, $0.40 the year after, then $0.35 a year for eight years (the 2021 to 2025 median), and then declines 5% a year. What keeps it going is that the company's customers consume sputtering targets in continuing production, and the business has produced positive earning power every year since 2017. We credit no growth: nothing in the filings (no backlog, contract or paid-for capacity producing revenue) puts growth beyond the first-half 2026 rebound in the bag. Bull case: $9.90 per share. The business is worth $7.36, the company owes nothing, and net cash adds $2.54. Earning power holds at $0.55 a year for ten years, then declines 3% a year. That is the level the company actually reached in 2022 and 2023 ($0.58 and $0.51) and close to its first-half 2026 pace, so it assumes the current strength lasts rather than reverting to the 2024 to 2025 level. It does not include spherical powders, new products or share gains. What could make this wrong. Concentration is the dominant risk: a single customer was 66% of 2025 revenue, and a reduction in its orders would take the business toward the bear case within a year. A part of 2026 revenue is raw material price pass-through, which can reverse. We could not reconcile one small 2022 working capital line from the filings (about $37,000); it does not affect the conclusion. Margin-of-safety price: $3.50. We are only moderately sure of the earning level: it moved from $0.58 to $0.24 in three years and rests on two customers, so we do not rely on the 2026 rebound. The worst plausible outcome is losing most of the largest customer's volume. The business has no debt and no dividend commitments, so it would survive that, and the cash alone would be about $2.54 of the price. If we are wrong about the two things most likely to be wrong, customer retention and whether 2026 margins hold, the shares are worth about $3.50 to $4.00. At $3.50 the price assigns roughly $0.96 to the operating business, which is less than three years of the $0.35 normal level, and the return would come mostly through retained cash and share repurchases rather than dividends. The price assumes a three-to-four-year holding period. The price is not set higher, because beyond it the return depends on the first-half 2026 results continuing, which the filings do not yet secure. Our earlier estimates for this company were prepared on a different basis and are not comparable to these figures.
