Pilgrim's Pride is one of the two largest chicken processors in the United States and, through Moy Park, Pilgrim's Food Masters (the former Tulip and Kerry meats and meals businesses) and Pilgrim's UK, a large fresh pork, chicken and prepared-food supplier in the United Kingdom and Ireland, plus a sizeable chicken business in Mexico. In 2025 sales were $18.5 billion: $10.6 billion in the U.S., $5.3 billion in Europe and $2.2 billion in Mexico. About 82% of the shares are held by JBS, the Brazilian meat company, which controls the board and capital allocation. The business is a commodity processor. Its earnings are set by the spread between chicken prices and feed grain costs, and that spread swings hard. We measure what the business produces for its owners as operating cash flow, stripped of working-capital swings, less stock pay and the capital spending needed to keep the plants running (spending tied to sales growth is treated as investment). On that basis, and adding back cash interest so that debt can be handled separately, the business produced between 1.2% of sales (2021, a year that also absorbed $225 million of antitrust and worker settlements) and 7.1% of sales (2024). The ten-year median, 2016-2025, is about 4.6% of sales. We use the full ten years because chicken has run through at least two complete cycles in that span - the 2018-2021 trough of oversupply and pandemic disruption and the 2022 and 2024-25 peaks - and a shorter window would capture mostly the recent boom. Applied to 2025 sales, the normal level is about $850 million a year, or roughly $3.56 a share before interest. The 2025 per-share owner earnings after interest were $3.65, down from $4.59 in 2024; recent results are weaker still. In the first half of 2026 operating income fell to $229 million from $917 million a year earlier, and the second quarter earned just $66 million, so every case starts 2026 well below normal. Capital spending is a real judgement. The company spent $711 million in 2025 and says it will spend $900-950 million in 2026, much of it on growth and efficiency projects such as prepared-foods and case-ready capacity. We treat only the portion of spending that historically tracked sales growth as optional; the rest is charged as maintenance, which is why our owner earnings sit well below reported net income ($1.08 billion in 2025). We give no credit for the new capacity in any case, because it is not yet built or proven to lift through-cycle margins. Base case: 2026 is a near-trough year (about $0.20 a share), 2027 recovers part-way ($2.20), and from 2028 the business earns its ten-year median margin on today's sales, with no volume growth credited. Chicken demand has grown steadily, but the company's own record shows its volume growth came from acquisitions, not from a repeatable organic process, so it is left out. The business is worth about $55 a share; it owes about $10.60 a share net (roughly $2.86 billion of senior notes and other borrowings less about $240 million of cash beyond operating needs, plus a small minority interest); equity is about $44.41. Bear case: the industry's own record supplies the downturn. We take the 2026 weakness into a 2027 that looks like 2021 (1.2% of sales) and then, later in the decade, a repeat of the 2020-2023 stretch of oversupply and high grain costs (about 2.2%, 1.2% and 2.1% of sales in successive years). We also charge about $200 million of further antitrust settlements, since Phase 2 of the broiler price-fixing case is in discovery and $683 million has been expensed to date. Outside those episodes the margin settles at 2.85%, near the lower half of the decade. The business is worth about $31 a share against the same $10.60 of net debt, leaving about $20.20. The debt is serviceable in this case: it is fixed-rate (4.25% notes due 2031, 3.50% due 2032, 6.25% due 2033, 6.875% due 2034) with no maturity before 2031, so a bad cycle squeezes cash but does not force a refinancing. Bull case: 2026 is less bad ($0.80) and from 2028 margins hold at about 5.3%, the level of the stronger years 2016, 2022 and 2025, reflecting a larger share of branded and prepared foods that is already in the sales mix. The business is worth about $64.50 a share; less $10.60 of debt, about $53.90. This replaces our previous estimate. The earlier figures were built on a different basis and are not comparable. What changed in the business since then is mainly that the 2026 downturn has deepened, which is reflected in all three cases. How sure are we of the level? Moderately. Ten years show a median near 4.6% of sales but with three of ten years below 1.5% and two above 6.5%, so any single year is a poor guide. The worst plausible outcome is a long run of oversupply and high grain prices on top of large antitrust awards; the business has no customer concentration and its debt is long-dated and fixed, so it would survive, but owners could earn almost nothing for several years. The things we are most likely to be wrong about are the normal margin (if it is really 3% rather than 4.6%, the shares are worth roughly half the base), the size of the remaining antitrust bill, and how JBS directs cash - it paid out nearly $2.0 billion of special dividends in 2025, which is good for owners when it happens but leaves no buffer and puts the timing of returns in one shareholder's hands. The price assumes a three-to-five-year holding period for a full chicken cycle, and in weak years the business may pay nothing. Taking those together, the margin-of-safety price is $21 a share. At that price the bear case, which already includes a 2020-2021-style downturn and further settlements, implies roughly the purchase price back, while a normal cycle that ends near our base implies roughly doubling within four years, together with whatever special dividends the strong years produce. That combination is what supports the 20% annual target in the base case; above that level, a single further bad year or a large legal award would leave too little room.

Sales geography
United States (all regions: South, Southeast-heavy production, Midwest, West, Northeast), United Kingdom, Ireland, continental Europe, Mexico
Historical growth strategy
Growth by large acquisitions directed by controlling shareholder JBS (Gold'n Plump, GNP, Moy Park, Tulip, Kerry Meats and Meals) layered on steady capacity and efficiency spending in U.S. fresh chicken plants and a shift toward branded and prepared foods; excess cash returned through large special dividends rather than steady buybacks.
Chart analysis
A chartist would describe a long, volatile range-bound stock that spent years between the high teens and mid-$30s, broke out strongly in 2024 to new multi-year highs in the $40s-$50s on peak chicken margins, then rolled over in 2025-2026 as special dividends were paid and cutout prices fell, giving back much of the breakout. The pattern reads as a cyclical top followed by a downtrend of lower highs; chartists would watch the former breakout zone in the low-to-mid $30s as support and want a base to form before calling the decline finished.
