Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings sells cruises under three brands: Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises. About 84% of revenue comes from guests who book through the United States. In 2025 it carried about 3.0 million passengers over 25.3 million passenger cruise days at 103.5% occupancy, on capacity that was about 4% larger than in 2024, and revenue reached $9.83 billion. How we measure earnings. We start from cash flow from operations, remove swings in working capital (mostly customer deposits collected ahead of sailings), subtract stock compensation as a real cost, and subtract the part of capital spending needed to stand still. Because the company's spending is dominated by new ships, we treated capital spending in excess of a fixed share of revenue growth (25.3% of each year's revenue increase) as maintenance. This is a deliberately strict rule. Owner earnings per share on that basis were $0.73 (2016), $0.33 (2017), $0.58 (2018), $0.13 (2019), then deeply negative in 2020 to 2022 during the pandemic shutdown and restart, and $(1.72) in 2023, $1.47 in 2024 and $(2.46) in 2025. Those last swings come from the timing of ship deliveries: 2025 capital spending was $3.26 billion against $1.21 billion in 2024. The company reports that dry-dock costs are expensed rather than capitalised, and it guided to only about $0.5 billion of non-newbuild capital spending for 2026, which suggests the rule overstates true upkeep; we did not lift the earnings level on that basis because the figure is a forward plan, not a record. Anchor. We use the median of 2016 to 2019 and 2023 to 2025, excluding the 2020 to 2022 shutdown and restart years. That median is about $0.33 per share. Cash from operations has been solid ($2.09 billion in 2025), but historically almost all of it has been reinvested in new ships, leaving little for owners. Growth reconciliation. Owner earnings fell from $1.47 to $(2.46) per share in 2025, so the trailing rate is negative; the base case assumes zero growth from the anchor, not a rebound. The 13 ships on order ($21.5 billion, with export-credit financing covering about 80%) are real, secured additions to capacity, but their cost is paid mostly by borrowing and their returns are not yet proven at the ownership level, so we credit no growth from them. Base case, $5.40 per share. Owner earnings stay at about $0.33 per share indefinitely, valued at the fixed 6% rate. The fleet is long-lived, its ships are carried at $12.5 billion (Bahamas-registered) plus additional Marshall Islands-registered ships, and the brands have a multi-decade record, so we let the level persist. Bear case, $0.30 per share. Total debt is $14.6 billion. Every one percentage point higher on refinancing costs about $146 million a year of interest, roughly $0.30 per share and about the whole anchor. The bear case assumes borrowing costs rise enough on the refinancing that owner earnings fall to a few cents per share. Newbuild payments of $2.9 billion in 2026, $2.9 billion in 2027 and $1.8 billion in 2028 add to the strain. The equity is not worth less than zero in this case because the operating cash flow remains large, but almost nothing is left for owners. Bull case, $24.50 per share. Owner earnings return to the $1.47 achieved in 2024, a year with fewer ship deliveries, and hold there. This is supported by the disclosed low level of non-newbuild spending and by capacity growth from ships already ordered. What could make this wrong. If maintenance spending is truly near $0.5 billion a year, current owner earnings would be far higher than our base and the bull case is closer to typical. Conversely, a demand downturn, fuel or currency shocks (ship contracts are largely euro-denominated), or a credit downgrade would push results toward the bear case. Cruise shares also carry heavy leverage, so small changes in cash generation have large effects per share.
