Matador Resources is an independent oil and natural gas producer. Nearly all of its output comes from the Wolfcamp and Bone Spring formations of the Delaware Basin in Southeast New Mexico and West Texas, with a small position in Northwest Louisiana. Its San Mateo midstream joint venture processes and gathers gas and water for Matador and third parties. In 2025 it produced 207,070 barrels of oil equivalent per day, up from 170,751 in 2024 and 131,813 in 2023, and it sold its last Eagle Ford assets for $22.2 million. How we measure earnings. We start from operating cash flow, remove swings in working capital, subtract stock compensation as a real cost, and subtract the maintenance part of capital spending. For an oil producer, drilling is the cost of replacing the barrels already sold, so we count drilling, midstream spending and routine lease and mineral purchases as capital spending, and credit as growth spending only a limited share tied to revenue growth. The very large business purchases (Advance Energy in 2023 and Ameredev in 2024) are left out of spending because they are one-time deals, but that means the earnings we measure have not paid for those barrels; we take that into account by not assuming any growth from them. Owner earnings per share on this basis were $5.94 in 2021, $14.68 in 2022 (a peak commodity year), $2.12 in 2023, $4.82 in 2024 and $1.14 in 2025. Earlier years were negative because the company was spending heavily to build its position. The company has changed size sharply since 2023, so we treat only 2024 and 2025, the first two full years with the acquired assets, as representative, and use their midpoint of roughly $2.98 per share as the starting level. We do not use the 2022 peak or the pre-acquisition years. Base case, about $31.3 per share. Owner earnings had actually fallen 76% in 2025 (from $4.82 to $1.14). The base case starts at $2.98, above that trailing figure, because the 2025 result carried $2.18 billion of capital spending, including $339 million of property purchases, at a time when production was still rising 21%; in the first half of 2026 operating cash flow was $1.41 billion versus $1.23 billion a year earlier. Earnings are held flat for ten years and then decline 10% a year. The support: proved reserves were 667 million barrels of oil equivalent at the end of 2025, about nine years of current production. More importantly, new wells and newly identified drilling locations on Matador's own Delaware Basin acreage added 135.0 million barrels of reserves in 2025, 99.9 million in 2024 and 88.3 million in 2023, against production of 75.6, 62.5 and 48.1 million. That is a three-year record of finding more than it produces. We give no credit for production growth, for higher prices, or for the earnings of properties bought in 2026. Bear case, about $7.8 per share. Earnings stay at the weak 2025 level of $1.14 per share for the nine years that current proved reserves last, and then nothing continues, because we cannot point to evidence that replacement would go on beyond that. Leverage is the risk here: long-term debt was $3.40 billion at the end of 2025 and $4.22 billion at June 30, 2026, after roughly $1.23 billion of cash paid for oil and gas property acquisitions in the first half of 2026. We did not add that debt as a deduction, since interest is already inside operating cash flow; it belongs in the bear case because a highly indebted producer has less room if results stay weak. Bull case, about $50.6 per share. Earnings return to the 2024 level of $4.82 per share and hold for ten years, followed by the same 10% annual decline. This assumes the company's own drilling program keeps adding reserves faster than it produces, as it has for three years. What would make this wrong. Oil and gas prices are the largest swing factor and are not forecast here. Our earnings measure has moved between $1.14 and $14.68 per share in five years. If Matador's new drilling locations stop replacing production, the bear case becomes the likely outcome. Property purchases and business acquisitions have driven a large share of past reserve growth, and we could not tie the 2026 acquisition spending to specific properties from the annual report, so none of its earnings are counted. The margin-of-safety price is $15 per share, roughly half of our base value and about twice the bear case, which reflects the cyclical nature of the business, rising debt, and the dependence of its earnings on prices it does not control.
