MSA Safety, founded in 1914 in Pittsburgh, makes equipment that workers and firefighters are required to wear or carry: gas detectors (portable ALTAIR instruments, fixed systems and, since May 2025, M&C TechGroup's gas-analysis systems), fire-service gear (the G1 self-contained breathing apparatus, Cairns and Gallet helmets, Globe turnout gear) and industrial protective equipment (V-Gard hard hats, fall protection). In 2025 sales were $1.87 billion: detection $763 million (41%), fire service about $647 million (35%) and industrial PPE $464 million (25%). Demand is anchored by safety regulation and by the need to replace certified equipment, which supports steady pricing. How we measured earnings. We start from operating cash flow, strip out working-capital swings, and deduct stock compensation and the capital spending needed to keep the business running. Until 2023 the cash flow was distorted by legacy cumulative-trauma product-liability claims: claim payments, insurance recoveries and finally a $341 million cash contribution when MSA divested the subsidiary holding those claims (MSA LLC) in January 2023. Those flows are gone, so we measure the business from the 2023 divestiture onward, excluding the legacy payments. On that basis owner earnings were about $7.07 per share in 2023, $7.18 in 2024 and $6.99 in 2025. Adding back cash interest (owners' cash before paying lenders) gives business cash flow of $8.27, $8.09 and $7.81 per share. We anchor on the median, $8.09, or roughly $313 million on today's 38.7 million diluted shares. About $21 million a year of amortization on acquired intangibles (Bacharach, M&C, Globe) is added back; because those acquired assets wear out, we give no credit for future acquisitions in the base case. Near-term path. Business cash flow fell 3.5% in 2025 as fire-service sales dropped about 9% (a shift in U.S. Assistance to Firefighters Grant funding, the autumn 2025 federal shutdown and tighter European budgets) and tariffs, inflation and currency cut gross margin from 47.6% to 46.5%. We nonetheless start 2026 at $8.50 per share (+9%) because the evidence points the other way: the 2025 annual report says delayed breathing-apparatus orders shifted into 2026, M&C contributes a full year, and the first half of 2026 shows operating income of $205 million versus $164 million a year earlier, with gross margin of 48.5% versus 46.2%. Base case ($166 per share). $8.50 in 2026, growing 3.5% a year through 2030 and 3% through 2035 to about $11.30. That is below the 5.6% a year that sales grew from 2016 to 2025, part of which came from acquisitions; the growth we credit comes from price increases and regulation-driven replacement. After year ten we hold earnings flat with no further growth: more than a century of operation and mandated, certified safety gear are the evidence that the earning power persists. The business is worth about $6.85 billion ($177 per share). Bear case ($101 per share). Fire service keeps shrinking as grant funding and municipal budgets tighten, and tariff and currency pressure push gross margin back toward the 44% of 2022. Business cash flow slips to $7.60 in 2026 and $6.60 by 2028 and stays there. The business is worth about $4.31 billion ($111 per share). Even here cash flow covers interest about eight times, so the debt is not a threat. Bull case ($241 per share). The first-half 2026 margin holds ($8.90 in 2026), detection keeps growing at the double-digit pace it showed in the Americas in 2025, and MSA keeps adding small acquisitions as it has for a decade (Globe 2017, Sierra Monitor 2019, Bacharach 2021, M&C 2025). Growth is 6% a year to 2030 and 5% to 2035, then 3% for another ten years before leveling off. The business is worth about $9.73 billion ($252 per share). Debt. At June 30, 2026 MSA owed $600 million. At the end of 2025 its debt was $282 million on a revolving credit line maturing in 2030, $200 million of 2.69% notes payable through 2036, about $49 million of 3.40% sterling notes payable through 2031 and $50 million of 5.25% notes due 2028. It held $200 million of cash, of which we treat $150 million as surplus. The long fixed-rate notes cost well below 6%, which is worth about $41 million to owners. Net debt is therefore about $409 million, or $10.56 per share, subtracted from each case: bear $111 minus $10.56 = $101; base $177 minus $10.56 = $166; bull $252 minus $10.56 = $241. No near-term maturity or covenant affects the outcome. What changed. Our previous estimate (base about $55) used higher discount rates and an earnings level weighed down by legacy product-liability payments and the one-time 2023 contribution, none of which affect today's business. Measured without them, and with the strong first half of 2026, the value is much higher. Not everything moved up: 2025 earnings fell and fire-service sales are weaker than before, and both are carried in the bear case. What would make this wrong: a lasting fall in U.S. fire-service grant funding, a competitor taking breathing-apparatus contracts, or tariffs permanently lowering margins. One item could not be fully separated from the filings: 2023 cash taxes were reduced by the tax benefit from the MSA LLC divestiture, which flatters that year slightly. Our anchor is the 2024 figure, so it is not affected.

Sales geography
Americas segment (about two-thirds of sales): mainly the United States, sold nationwide across the Northeast, Midwest, South and West, plus Canada, Mexico, Brazil and other Latin America. International segment (about one-third): mainly Europe (Germany, France, United Kingdom), China, Australia and the Middle East.
Historical growth strategy
Organic growth from new certified products in regulated safety categories (G1 breathing apparatus, ALTAIR gas detectors, connected safety software) and steady price increases, supplemented by periodic bolt-on acquisitions (Globe Manufacturing 2017, Sierra Monitor 2019, Bacharach 2021, M&C TechGroup 2025) funded from cash flow and its credit line; in 2023 it divested legacy product-liability claims to focus on the operating business.
Chart analysis
A chartist would describe MSA as a long-term uptrend: the shares climbed from the $40s in 2015-2016 to the $160-170 area in 2021, corrected in 2022, and made new highs near $200 in 2023-2024 before pulling back through 2025. The pattern since 2021 looks like a wide sideways range roughly between $130 and $200, with the long-term rising trendline still intact; a break above the prior highs would signal resumption of the primary uptrend, while a close below the range floor would mark the first major trend failure in a decade.
