Coffee Holding Co. is a small Staten Island, New York roaster and wholesaler of coffee, selling unroasted green coffee to other roasters and small shops, and roasted private-label and branded coffee (including its Cafe Caribe and Cafe Supremo lines aimed at the growing Latino consumer market) to retailers and foodservice distributors. It is a thin-margin, commodity-input business: its main raw material is Arabica and Robusta green coffee, whose price it partly hedges with futures and options, and its ability to pass rising costs through to customers determines most of its profitability from year to year. Owner earnings here (operating cash flow after removing working-capital swings, stock compensation, and the portion of capital spending needed just to replace worn-out equipment) have swung from roughly $2.5 million in a good year to a loss of over $2 million in a bad one across the last nine fiscal years, entirely driven by the coffee commodity cycle and, most recently, new tariffs on imported coffee. Gross margin fell from about 20% in fiscal 2024 to about 16% in fiscal 2025 specifically because of tariff costs on imported green coffee that the company has not yet been able to fully pass through to customers - a well-documented pattern in this business, since price increases to customers lag cost increases. One customer accounted for about 12.6% of net sales in fiscal 2025, a moderate but not extreme concentration. Given this volatility, we anchor the valuation on the median of the last nine fiscal years of owner earnings per share (about $0.22), rather than on the most recent year, which happened to be an unusually strong one. Owner earnings actually declined about 7% in the year just completed (fiscal 2025 versus fiscal 2024) as the tariff-driven margin compression took hold; we have not assumed that trend reverses in year one of our base case, absorbing further pressure before a gradual, multi-year recovery as pricing catches up with costs. Our bear case assumes tariff and commodity cost pressure persists for an extended period, with the company only partially able to raise prices, holding owner earnings near breakeven to modestly positive for most of the next decade. Our base case assumes the margin pressure gradually eases over two to three years as pricing catches up, settling into a modest, low-single-digit long-term growth path supported by growth in the private-label and Cafe Caribe branded businesses, offset by intense competition from larger coffee packagers. Our bull case assumes the company successfully passes through its higher costs within a year or two and grows its branded and private-label volumes at a healthy pace, returning to and sustaining owner earnings near the levels achieved in fiscal 2024-2025. None of these cases assumes any change in the broader coffee market or a market recovery; they reflect only how well this specific business navigates its own cost structure and customer relationships. Because this is an ongoing operating business whose productive assets (roasting and packaging equipment) are continually replaced out of the maintenance capital spending already charged against owner earnings, we treat the years beyond our ten-year forecast as a perpetuity rather than assuming the business runs down to zero, with growth held to less than 1% a year given the company's limited pricing power in a competitive commodity market. In both the base and bull cases, this indefinite-future value represents somewhat more than half of the total estimated worth of the shares, which is typical for a going-concern industrial business but means the valuation depends more on our judgment about the durability of the business than on the next few years' results alone. On this basis we estimate the shares are worth roughly $1.72 in our bear case, $4.56 in our base case, and $8.22 in our bull case. Given how wide this range is relative to the base case - a signature of a genuinely cyclical, thin-margin commodity business rather than missing research - the margin-of-safety price carries a meaningfully larger discount to our base-case estimate than it would for a more predictable business, and we peg the margin-of-safety price at roughly $2.56 per share. Two accounting notes for transparency. First, the company's fiscal 2020 and fiscal 2021 revenue figures were restated in amendments filed in March 2023; based on our review this was a presentation reclassification between revenue and cost of sales with no effect on operating cash flow or net income, and we used the restated revenue figures. Second, in fiscal 2019 the company had a noncontrolling interest in a subsidiary that has since been fully absorbed into the consolidated business; our per-share figures use the cash flow and share count as reported without a separate noncontrolling-interest adjustment, which we judge immaterial in the recent years that matter most to this valuation.
