Navient is a run-off student lender. It owns $15.5 billion of Private Education Loans (about 4-year remaining weighted average life, 2.49% net interest margin in 2025) and $28.1 billion of federally guaranteed FFELP loans (about 8-year remaining life, 0.69% margin), both funded largely by non-recourse securitization debt. FFELP loans are no longer made and simply wind down. The company sold its healthcare services business in September 2024 and its government services business in February 2025, and outsourced loan servicing to MOHELA in July 2024, so it is now essentially a lender. How we measured earnings. We start from operating cash flow, remove swings in working capital (accrued interest and other assets and liabilities), and subtract stock compensation. Because a lender's loan-loss provisions are added back in cash flow but are a real, recurring cost (net charge-offs were $373 million in 2025), we also deduct the provision for loan losses. Mark-to-market swings on hedges are non-cash and are left out. On this basis owner earnings per share were $1.20 in 2016, $0.84, $1.74, $2.99, $4.00 (2020), $1.80, $0.51, $3.20, $1.00 and $0.47 in 2025. Per-share results are erratic and the loan book has shrunk from about $62 billion (start of 2023) to $43.6 billion, so we anchor on the median of 2021-2025, about $111 million a year (roughly $1.17 per current share on 95 million shares). We did not credit share buybacks, which cut the count from 322 million to about 95 million over the decade, because they add value only if shares are bought below worth, which is not a given. Year-one reconciliation. Owner earnings fell 58% in 2025 (from $111 million to $47 million). Our base case starts at the $111 million normal level rather than the 2025 print. The reasons are dated and in the filing: expenses tied to the divested business-processing segment ($240 million of the $259 million drop in operating costs) and the servicing outsourcing are now out of the base, management reports its $400 million expense-reduction goal met and exceeded, and first-half 2026 net income was $42 million versus $11 million a year earlier. Cash flow from operations, however, was weaker ($96 million versus $197 million), and 2025 included a $280 million provision that exceeded net charge-offs less releases only partly, so we treat this as not yet proven. Base case (about $8 per share). FFELP earnings (roughly a quarter of the total) decay about 11% a year in line with the 8-year life. Private loan earnings shrink about 4% a year for ten years, matching the slowing decline in that book (down 10%, 7% and 2% in the last three years) and originations of $2.5 billion in 2025, then run off at about 15% a year. We do not credit growth from the elimination of the federal Grad PLUS program on July 1, 2026, because private lending volume gains from it have not yet happened, and 2025's jump in originations was mostly refinancing ($2.1 billion), which is rate-sensitive. Bear case (about $2.50). Earnings stay at the weak 2025 level of $47 million, FFELP decays 11% a year and private earnings run off 10% a year, as the book did in 2023, with credit costs still rising (private net charge-off rate 1.68% in 2023, 2.08% in 2024, 2.18% in 2025). Bull case (about $16). Earnings reach the five-year average of roughly $187 million as the cost savings show fully in results, and the private book holds level for ten years at the 2025 origination pace before running off. What we could not reconcile. Reported book equity is $2.4 billion (about $25 a share), well above our cases. Book value counts loans at amortized cost and does not reflect that spreads are thin and the book is shrinking, so we rely on earnings. If Navient wins meaningful private graduate loan volume at similar margins, or credit losses fall, our base case would be too low. If charge-offs keep exceeding provisions, or expenses do not fall as reported, it would be too high. Note: the security trading under JSM is a Navient debt security; the common stock trades under a different symbol.
