bear $0.00 base $0.00 bull $0.07 margin of safety $1.10 market price* $13.62
Business condition attached to the margin of safety Sustained positive owner earnings: trailing twelve-month operating cash flow, after removing working-capital swings, stock compensation and capital spending, of at least about $100 million (roughly $0.22 per current share), achieved without material new share issuance.
Iovance Biotherapeutics sells two cancer products. Amtagvi (lifileucel) is a one-time cell therapy made individually for each patient from immune cells taken from their own tumor. It was the first T cell therapy approved for a solid tumor. It has U.S. accelerated approval for adults with advanced melanoma that has progressed after PD-1 immunotherapy, and its U.S. launch began in February 2024. Proleukin (aldesleukin), an older IL-2 drug that Iovance bought from Clinigen in May 2023, is given as part of the Amtagvi treatment and is also sold on its own. Amtagvi is made at the company's own plant in Philadelphia. Sales come almost entirely from U.S. treatment centers. Amtagvi is also approved in Canada and Australia, and some Proleukin is sold in Europe and the U.K. Sales are growing fast: $164 million in 2024, $264 million in 2025 (Amtagvi $220 million, Proleukin $43 million), $171 million in the first half of 2026 and a record $99 million in the second quarter of 2026. The business still spends much more than it brings in. We measure the cash the business generates for its owners: operating cash flow, adjusted to remove working-capital swings, with stock compensation counted as a real cost and capital spending subtracted. On that measure the company lost money in every one of the last ten years: about $348 million in 2024 and $375 million in 2025. After a 19% workforce cut announced in August 2025, and after it stopped using its outside contract manufacturer in early 2026, the loss fell to about $122 million in the first half of 2026. That is roughly $240 million a year. The first-half cost base was about 50% of sales for making the product (56% gross margin in the second quarter), about $156 million a year for selling and administration, and about $240 million a year for research. Research pays for the confirmatory Phase 3 trial TILVANCE-301 (running since late 2022), a registration trial in lung cancer and newer programs. Our valuation credits only what the business has already achieved. We do not credit future sales growth, because it depends on more treatment centers, more referrals and new country approvals that have not happened yet. The strong launch trend is real, but it is only about two years old. We also give no value to pipeline programs that have not produced an approved product. Base case: sales stay at the first-half 2026 pace of about $340 million a year, the gross margin is about 53%, and spending stays at current levels. That burns roughly $230 million a year, which would use up the roughly $304 million of cash held at June 30, 2026 by about the end of 2027. Even if research were then cut to a minimum, this level of sales does not cover selling, administration and plant costs, so the business cannot pay for itself. The case comes out below zero. We show it as $0 because the company has not borrowed money (total liabilities are about $180 million against $304 million of cash). Shareholders can lose their investment, but nothing beyond it. Bear case: sales slip back to the trailing twelve-month level of about $325 million. Recent cost problems keep the margin near 48%: in 2025 the company booked $18 million of costs from patients who dropped out and batches that failed specifications, and a $9.5 million write-down of excess Proleukin inventory tied to a supply agreement it inherited. Losses continue, and the company keeps issuing shares to fund them, as it has done every year. The diluted share count rose from about 235 million in 2023 to about 453 million shares outstanding by June 2026. Worth $0. Bull case: the second-quarter 2026 pace of about $400 million a year and its 56% gross margin both hold. Once the cash is spent, research is cut back to what the approved product needs, and the remaining business roughly breaks even, protected by patents the company expects to last into 2042. Worth about $0.07 a share. All figures are discounted at 6%. On what the business has proven so far, the shares are worth close to nothing beyond cash that current spending will use up within about eighteen months. Management says its cash will last into the second half of 2028, but that depends on sales growth we do not count. Any value above zero depends on Amtagvi sales continuing to grow until the business earns more than it spends, and on the company getting there without heavy further share issuance. The main risks are that Amtagvi's approval depends on the confirmatory trial and that almost all value rests on a single product. The estimate would be revisited if the company produces sustained positive cash earnings. If it earned about $100 million a year through 2042, the shares would be worth about $2.20 each. The margin-of-safety price is about half that figure.
