IDEXX Laboratories sells diagnostic tests and services to veterinarians, mainly for dogs and cats. The model is a razor-and-blade one. Clinics buy or lease IDEXX's in-house analyzers (the Catalyst chemistry, ProCyte hematology and SediVue urine systems). After that they keep buying the test slides and cartridges those machines use, plus SNAP rapid tests, IDEXX's network of reference laboratories, and practice-management and imaging software. Recurring consumables, lab services and software make up most of revenue. That base has grown almost every year for two decades. Revenue went from $1.78 billion in 2016 to $4.30 billion in 2025. Smaller Water-testing and Livestock/Poultry/Dairy businesses make up the rest. About 64% of sales are in the United States. Earnings level. We measure owner earnings as operating cash flow with three adjustments: we take out year-to-year working-capital swings, charge stock compensation as a real cost, and deduct only the capital spending needed to keep the business as it is. On that basis, owner earnings per diluted share rose from $2.79 in 2016 to $10.70 in 2024 and $15.32 in 2025. We do not treat 2025 as normal. About $131 million of it came from a one-time deferred-tax benefit: a US tax-law change let IDEXX deduct research costs sooner, which shifts tax payments in time rather than lowering them for good. Without it, 2025 was about $13.70 a share. 2022 was a weak year ($7.38) because inventory and receivables built up heavily. Before paying its lenders, the business produced cash equal to 19.7% to 26.7% of revenue across 2021 to 2025 (excluding the 2025 tax item). The middle of that range, 23.7%, is our anchor. Owner earnings grew 28% a share in 2025 excluding the tax item, and 43% including it. Our base case assumes much less in its first year: about 10% revenue growth in 2026, in line with the 11.8% the company reported for the first half of 2026, and no gain in margin. What drives growth, and what we credited. We credited growth that comes from a process IDEXX has run for many years: placing more analyzers that then consume tests every year, and raising prices each year. US diagnostics revenue per clinic grew about 6% in 2025, while US same-store clinical visits fell about 2%. The company expects visits to keep falling in 2026 because clinics are short of staff. Growth has therefore come from more testing per visit and from price, not from more pet visits, and our cases assume visits stay soft. We did not credit any margin expansion, new-product launches or market growth. Amortization of acquired intangibles is small (net intangibles are about $110 million), so it needs no adjustment. Base case. Revenue grows 7% a year for five years and 5% a year for the next five, which is below the roughly 10% a year IDEXX has delivered over the past decade. Margins hold at 23.7%. Over years 11 to 30, growth slows to 2.5%, supported by the installed base and pricing. Earnings then stay flat for another twenty years, and we give no value after that. The business is worth about $33.4 billion. It owes about $0.77 billion net: $519 million drawn on its credit facility, $150 million of senior notes due within a year, $300 million of longer-term notes, less $197 million of cash. That leaves about $32.6 billion, or $411 a share. Bear case. This case includes one full downturn of the size veterinary spending actually saw in 2008 and 2009, when IDEXX's revenue stopped growing. Here revenue is flat for two years and margins fall to 19.5%, close to the 2022 low. After that, revenue grows only 3% a year to year 10 with margins of 21%. A falling visit trend, price resistance from large corporate clinic chains, and competition from Zoetis and Antech in point-of-care testing keep growth slow. Growth is 1% a year in years 11 to 20, and earnings then shrink 7% a year for twenty years before ending. The business is worth about $16.5 billion. After $0.77 billion of net debt, that leaves $15.7 billion, or $198 a share. Bull case. Revenue grows 9.5% a year for five years and 7% for the next five, still below the past decade's pace. Margins stay at 26.7%, the level the business actually earned in 2025 excluding the tax item. Growth is 3.5% in years 11 to 30, then earnings stay flat for twenty years. The business is worth about $48.6 billion. After net debt, that is $47.9 billion, or $603 a share. Debt. The debt is small next to the cash the business generates. Cash interest was $37.7 million in 2025, against more than $1 billion of cash generated before interest. The $75 million of 2026 senior notes fall due in September 2026. The $250 million term loan matures in November 2028 and the $1 billion revolving credit line in November 2030. The only financial covenant caps debt at 3.5 times a cash-earnings measure, and IDEXX is far below that. Every case can comfortably carry this debt. IDEXX regularly borrows on its credit line to buy back shares: it bought $1.2 billion of stock in 2025 and $698 million in the first half of 2026. Borrowing therefore tends to rise when buybacks are heavy. Changes since our previous analysis. The earlier figures were built on a different basis and cannot be compared with these. The business itself has done better since then. First-half 2026 revenue grew 11.8% and net income grew 15%, even though clinic visits kept falling. Margin-of-safety price. We are fairly confident in the earnings level. Recurring revenue held up through the 2009 recession and the 2020 shutdown, and the cash-generation rate has stayed within a narrow band for five years. The weak spot is that growth now depends on charging more and testing more per visit, not on more pet visits. The plausible worst outcome no case models is a sustained pricing pushback from consolidated clinic groups combined with a competitor matching IDEXX's analyzer-plus-consumables lock-in. Even then, the installed base would keep producing cash for years, and the balance sheet carries little debt, so the business would survive. We could be wrong in three main ways: pricing power fades, margins slip back toward the 2022 level, and growth after year 10 is weaker than assumed. If all three went against us, the shares would be worth roughly what the bear case shows, about $200. The price assumes a three-to-five-year holding period. The company pays no dividend, but it retires roughly 2% of its shares each year, so owner earnings per share keep compounding at around 10% while waiting. At $175 a share, normal owner earnings of about $13.70 a share are a cash yield near 8%, growing at about 10% a share. At that price the bear-case value of about $200 still sits above the price. If the business does no better than its recent record and the shares come to be valued near our base case within about four years, the base case implies roughly 20% a year from $175. That is the margin-of-safety price.

Sales geography
United States (about 64% of revenue, all regions: Northeast, Midwest, South, West); Canada; Latin America; Europe (Germany, United Kingdom, France, Italy and others); Middle East; Africa; Asia Pacific (Japan, Australia, China and others).
Historical growth strategy
Organic growth from expanding the installed base of in-clinic analyzers (Catalyst, ProCyte, SediVue), which pulls through high-margin recurring consumables. This is backed by steady annual price increases, a growing reference-laboratory network, software (practice management and cloud imaging), new assays and menu expansion, and occasional small tuck-in acquisitions. Free cash flow and credit-facility borrowing fund ongoing share repurchases that shrink the diluted share count about 1-2% a year.
Chart analysis
Over the long run IDXX has been a classic uptrend stock, compounding steadily through the 2010s into a blow-off peak near $700 in late 2021. The 2022 bear market cut it by more than half to the low $300s, and 2023-2024 produced a series of failed rallies below the old high, forming a broad multi-year base between roughly $350 and $600. In 2025 the stock rallied strongly out of that base back toward its prior highs. A chartist would read the multi-year range as a base, treat the former $550-$600 ceiling as support, and look for a sustained move above the 2021 peak, with the 200-day moving average rising beneath price, to confirm a resumed primary uptrend. A failure back into the old range would signal a renewed sideways phase.
