Business condition attached to the margin of safety Owner earnings are positive on a trailing four-quarter basis after the 2026-2027 restructuring cash costs are paid, showing that the announced cost savings are reaching cash flow while revenue holds near current levels.
The Honest Company sells baby and personal-care products under the Honest brand: diapers, wipes, baby and adult personal care and related items. Three retailers account for most of sales: in 2025 Amazon was about 39% of revenue, Target about 28% and Walmart about 8%. Revenue was $371.3 million in 2025 (2024: $378.3 million; 2021: $318.6 million). The company has reported net losses in each year we reviewed, largely because it pays a lot in stock compensation and, more recently, in restructuring charges. How we measure earnings. We start with operating cash flow, remove swings in receivables, inventory, payables and similar working-capital items, then subtract stock-based compensation as a real cost and deduct the capital spending needed just to stay in business (about $1.5 million a year). On that basis the company lost money per share in 2021 through 2024 (from about $0.53 negative in 2022 to about $0.05 negative in 2024) and earned about $0.075 per share (roughly $8.4 million) in 2025. The 2025 cash flow adds back a $15.9 million write-down of apparel inventory and a $2.9 million fixed-asset impairment; these are sunk costs of exiting apparel, so we treat them as non-recurring. Stock compensation fell from $15.7 million in 2024 to $10.5 million in 2025, which is a large part of the improvement. Over 2024-2025, the period since the 2023 restructuring, the median is roughly break-even, about $1.6 million a year, and that is the earnings level we start from. 2021 to 2023 are excluded as a different, loss-making and inventory-swinging business. Our values count owner earnings only and do not add the company's cash; the revolving credit line was undrawn at the end of 2025. What is in the cases. In October 2025 the board approved Powering Honest Growth: exiting apparel, the Honest.com fulfillment channel and Canadian stores, closing a warehouse and trimming costs. The company expects $10 million to $15 million of annual benefit (net of the sales given up), starting in 2026, and $15 million to $20 million of cash costs in 2026 with the rest in early 2027. The exits are done or under way, so we give partial credit. In the first half of 2026 revenue fell to $161.4 million from $190.7 million, while net income rose to $10.6 million from $7.1 million, which fits savings arriving faster than lost sales; we did not raise the earnings level on that, since a large part of the half-year cash flow came from selling down inventory. Base case: about $0.94 per share. The starting level of $1.6 million is lifted by $8 million of the announced savings (below the $10 million low end), giving about $9.6 million a year. 2026 carries about $17.5 million of restructuring cash costs. We hold the level flat, with no growth, for 25 years, since revenue has stayed between $300 million and $378 million every year since 2020. Growth from new products, more shelf space or market expansion is left out because none of it is secured. Bear case: about negative $0.06 per share. None of the savings reach cash flow, restructuring cash costs run to $20 million, and the level stays at $1.6 million for ten years and then stops. The filing describes distribution losses on diapers at two of the largest retailers in 2024 and 2025 and expects diaper revenue to keep being hurt. The company has no borrowings, so this is not a debt problem; the case is worth roughly zero because earnings are thin against the restructuring bill. Bull case: about $1.75 per share. The full $15 million of savings is realised, restructuring costs come in at the low end of the range ($15 million), and the resulting $16.6 million a year continues flat for 25 years. What could make this wrong. Concentration is the main risk: Amazon, Target and Walmart make up about 75% of revenue and their vendor agreements do not guarantee purchases. Tariffs, and reliance on suppliers and manufacturers in China, Mexico and other countries, raise costs. If the savings prove real and revenue stabilises, value is higher than our base; the reverse if diaper losses spread. Owner earnings are still tiny, so small changes in cost move value a lot. We could not verify the reason for a $6.2 million 'other' non-cash item in the 2025 cash flow and left it in operating cash flow.
