Business condition attached to the margin of safety Fiscal 2026 results confirm the Wet Shave manufacturing-consolidation project (disclosed as completing by Q2 FY2026) is done and restructuring and impairment charges have receded toward the roughly $17-20 million a year run-rate seen before FY2025 (versus FY2025's $47.9 million restructuring plus $51.1 million impairment), confirming FY2025's earnings trough was substantially one-time rather than a new structural step-down.
Edgewell Personal Care makes and sells personal-care brands most households recognize: Schick and Wilkinson Sword razors, Banana Boat and Hawaiian Tropic sun care, Playtex, Carefree and Stayfree feminine care, and Wet Ones wipes. It's a mature, cash-generative business, but one competing in categories under real pressure — from direct-to-consumer razor brands, private label, and cost inflation — and fiscal 2025 showed that pressure clearly: operating income fell by more than half from the prior year. Some of that fiscal 2025 weakness looks temporary. The company disclosed a manufacturing plant fire, a vendor's bankruptcy, and a commercial realignment charge as discrete items in the year, together with a step-up in restructuring costs tied to consolidating its Wet Shave manufacturing footprint — a project the company says will be complete by the second quarter of fiscal 2026. Capital spending also rose sharply, to $77 million from $56.5 million the year before, and management has guided to a similar $70-80 million for fiscal 2026, split between maintenance, new products, and IT systems — so the higher spending looks like the new normal rather than a one-off. We build our estimate of what the shares are worth from cash actually generated, not reported profit — starting from operating cash flow, backing out the swings caused by inventory and receivables timing and stock-based compensation, and subtracting the capital spending needed just to keep the business running as it is (separated from spending aimed at growth). On that basis, Edgewell's normalized annual owner earnings over the past five years have run about $2.00 per share at the midpoint, with 2025 the weakest print in that stretch at $0.90. Base case: We assume fiscal 2026 earnings recover part of the way from 2025's trough — to roughly $1.30 per share — reflecting the removal of the year's one-time costs, without assuming the consolidation project's savings show up immediately or that competitive pressure eases. From there we assume roughly flat operating earnings with modest per-share growth (about 1.5% a year) coming mainly from continued share buybacks, which have already shrunk the diluted share count by about 20% over the past nine years. That path, discounted at a flat 6%, is worth about $28.90 per share today. Bear case: The recent run of "one-time" restructuring charges has in fact grown every year for the past three years (from $16.6 million to $47.9 million), so the bear case treats that pattern as more structural than management's framing suggests — assuming little recovery from 2025's level and a continued slow decline (about 3% a year) as private-label and direct-to-consumer competition keep eroding share, with capital spending staying elevated. This case is worth about $12.30 per share. Bull case: If the Wet Shave consolidation delivers on schedule and the fiscal 2025 one-time costs genuinely don't repeat, earnings could recover further — to around $1.80 per share in fiscal 2026 — with 3% annual growth thereafter as cost savings and continued buybacks compound. That case is worth about $48.40 per share. Because the downside case is a meaningful fraction of the base case here, reflecting real (not hypothetical) competitive and execution risk, the margin-of-safety price sits at a larger discount to the estimated value — around $17.30 per share — and it assumes confirmation in the fiscal 2026 results that the consolidation project is done and restructuring costs have come back down.
