Huntington Ingalls Industries builds and services ships for the U.S. Government through three units: Ingalls, Newport News and Mission Technologies. It reported revenue of $12.5 billion in 2025, up from $11.5 billion in 2024. Backlog was $53.1 billion at December 31, 2025, versus $48.7 billion a year earlier, roughly four times a year of revenue. U.S. Government orders were substantially all of that backlog. About 21% of it is expected to convert to sales in 2026. 2025 awards were about $16.9 billion, driven by Newport News and Ingalls and including a modification for two additional Block V Virginia class submarines. The company is also the exclusive prime contractor for nuclear aircraft carrier refueling and complex overhaul, and the fiscal 2026 defense authorization act covers the carriers William J. Clinton (CVN 82) and George W. Bush (CVN 83). How we measure earnings. We start from operating cash flow and remove the swings in trade working capital (receivables, contract assets, inventoried costs, prepaid items and payables and accruals), which in this business move by hundreds of millions of dollars with billing timing. We then subtract stock compensation ($54 million in 2025) and the part of capital spending that maintains the yards rather than grows them. Pension and retiree benefit payments (a $154 million outflow in 2025) stay in as a real cost. Per diluted share, this gives $10.76 (2016), $8.29, $3.56, $11.68, $12.08, $13.36, $15.30, $14.66, $6.76 (2024) and $15.46 (2025). The swings are large. 2024 was weak: operating cash flow was only $393 million, with a trade working capital outflow of $260 million, a $122 million deferred tax outflow and a $112 million retiree benefit outflow. 2025 was strong, and its operating cash flow includes a $203 million deferred income tax benefit that did not repeat in earlier years. We therefore use the median of 2019 to 2025, $13.36 per share, rather than the latest year. This window spans a weak year and a strong year and excludes 2018 (a $454 million retiree benefit outflow) and earlier years. Recent quarters were not used to move this level. Growth check. Owner earnings per share rose from $6.76 to $15.46 in 2025, but that is a rebound from a weak year, not a trend. The cases start from the $13.36 median, below 2025, and assume no growth. Backlog growth and new awards show the work is secured, but they do not show that earnings per share will rise. Backlog at Mission Technologies fell from $6.1 billion to $5.4 billion. The company also carries $104 million a year of purchased-intangible amortization from past acquisitions; we assume no growth, so that does not overstate value. The cases give no credit for share gains, margin expansion, new programs or shipyard throughput improvements. Annual capital spending has risen from $292 million in 2023 to $402 million in 2025. That is above the maintenance levels in some anchor years, a modest headwind the base case absorbs without lowering the level. Bear case, about $68 per share. Contract cost pressure is the named risk. About 46% of 2025 revenue came under fixed-price incentive contracts and 3% under firm fixed-price contracts, which the company says carry more financial risk than cost-type contracts, including from inflation. The bear case has earnings settling near the weak 2024 level, about $7 per share, for 15 years, then ending. Long-term debt is $2.7 billion, with $600 million due in 2027. Interest is already deducted in these earnings, so leverage sits in this case rather than in a separate deduction. Base case, about $171 per share. Earnings stay at $13.36 per share, with no growth, for 25 years, then are worth nothing. The support is the $53.1 billion of largely government backlog, the authorized carrier and Virginia class submarine work, the exclusive refueling role, and ten years of positive owner earnings in every year. Bull case, about $212 per share. Earnings hold at about $15.4 per share, the level reached in 2022, 2023 and 2025, for 30 years. This needs no growth, only that the recent level is sustained on the existing backlog and authorized programs. Values are per diluted share, use a 6% discount rate and do not subtract debt or add cash, because the earnings are already after interest. No case comes out at or below zero. What would make this wrong: cost overruns on fixed-price incentive work that push earnings toward or below the 2018 and 2024 levels for longer than the bear case assumes, a cut or delay in Navy funding for the programs above, or earnings that fade sooner than the 25 to 30 years assumed. The business is only part of what we value. The margin-of-safety price sits below the base case, because these earnings have swung widely from year to year.
