GitLab sells a software platform that development teams use to build and deliver software, mostly through annual subscriptions (self-managed and hosted SaaS). In the year ended January 31, 2026 (fiscal 2026) revenue was $955 million, up 26%, with an 87% gross margin. Contracted future revenue not yet recognized was $1,135.8 million, of which about 63% is expected within 12 months. About 82% of revenue is booked in the United States. GitLab also consolidates a China-based joint venture, JiHu, which contributed $9.3 million of revenue (about 1%) in fiscal 2026 and holds about $37 million of the company's cash. What the business earns for owners. We measure owner earnings as operating cash flow, less the swing in working capital (receivables, payables, accruals and customer prepayments), less stock-based pay, less the part of capital spending needed just to stand still. Stock pay is a real cost of employing people, so we count it. On that basis GitLab has not yet earned anything for its owners: about -$0.12 per share in fiscal 2025 and -$0.25 in fiscal 2026 (about -$18.9 million and -$42.4 million). Earlier years were worse (fiscal 2023 -$1.41, fiscal 2024 -$2.75). We anchor on fiscal 2025 and 2026 only. Fiscal 2024 is set aside because a one-time tax settlement with the Dutch tax authority distorted it: accrued liabilities rose about $259 million in fiscal 2024 and fell about $253 million in fiscal 2025, when $187.7 million was paid in cash. Years before that describe a much smaller company. Two accounting judgements matter. First, we strip out the growth in customer prepayments (deferred revenue rose $93.3 million in fiscal 2026 and $108.7 million in fiscal 2025), because that cash inflow lasts only while billings keep growing. If it were counted, fiscal 2026 owner earnings would be roughly +$51 million instead of -$42 million, so this one choice is the difference between a business at break-even and one that consumes cash. Second, sales commissions that are capitalized and later amortized are treated as the cash costs they are, not as working capital. Cash. GitLab has no borrowings on its balance sheet and held $1,259.9 million of cash and short-term investments at January 31, 2026 (about $7.44 per share on 169.3 million diluted shares). That cash earned $45.7 million of interest in fiscal 2026 (about $37.5 million of it received in cash), and that interest is already inside reported cash flow. To avoid counting it twice, we measure the operating burn without the interest (about -$79.9 million in fiscal 2026 and -$49.9 million in fiscal 2025, an average of about -$64.9 million) and then add the cash itself. Growth reconciliation. Owner earnings per share moved from -$0.12 to -$0.25 in fiscal 2026, a worsening, while revenue grew 26%. The base case therefore assumes no improvement in year one. It credits no growth because more revenue at a level that earns less than zero after stock pay adds no value. Margin improvement, share gains and new products such as the GitLab Duo Agent Platform are left out of the base case because none has yet shown up in owner earnings. Base case, about $4.62 per share. The operating business keeps burning about $64.9 million a year for ten years, which is worth about -$478 million today at a 6% discount rate, and nothing we can name and evidence continues beyond year ten. Adding the $1,259.9 million of cash leaves about $782 million, or $4.62 per share. Bear case, $0 per share. The burn stays at the fiscal 2026 level of about $79.9 million a year with no end in sight. The evidence for this: the burn grew from about $49.9 million in fiscal 2025; the customer net expansion rate fell from at least 130% in January 2024 to 123% and then 118% in January 2026; and operating cash flow in the first six months of fiscal 2027 was $146.1 million versus $155.7 million a year earlier, while stock pay rose from $110.1 million to $125.1 million. A burn of that size continued indefinitely is worth about -$1.33 billion against $1.26 billion of cash, so the operating business would absorb roughly all of the cash. With no borrowings, the case is floored at zero. Bull case, about $11.59 per share. Revenue growth is 18% in year one, fading steadily to 6% by year ten (below the 22% growth of the first half of fiscal 2027), supported by the contracted backlog and 118% net expansion. Stock pay has fallen as a share of revenue every year for three years (28.9% in fiscal 2023, 28.1% in fiscal 2024, 24.5% in fiscal 2025, 22.5% in fiscal 2026), and sales and marketing costs fell from 61% to 46% of revenue between fiscal 2024 and fiscal 2026. The bull case lets that pattern continue. The operating burn margin starts at about -7.5% of revenue in year one (no improvement assumed in year one, matching the trailing record), improves 1.5 points a year from year two, and reaches about +6% in year ten, when it produces about $177 million a year. That level is held for ten more years and then stops, since nothing beyond that is evidenced. This is worth about $4.15 per share, plus $7.44 of cash. What could make this wrong. On the upside, GitLab's operating loss has narrowed quickly (from $187 million in fiscal 2024 to $70 million in fiscal 2026), and if prepayment growth is treated as a permanent feature of annual billing, owner earnings are positive today. On the downside, operating cash flow fell in the latest six months while stock pay rose, and the expansion rate has declined two years running. Management's stated operating cash margin of 24% of revenue in fiscal 2026 differs from our figure mainly by stock pay ($215.0 million), working-capital swings ($50.8 million, mostly customer prepayments) and capital spending ($9.5 million). Margin-of-safety price, $2.75. This is about 60% of the base value, reflecting a business that currently consumes cash, a bear case at zero, and a value that rests mostly on the cash balance rather than on earnings.
