Genco Shipping & Trading owns and operates dry bulk ships. They carry iron ore, coal, grain, steel products and other bulk cargoes on routes around the world. In November 2025 it agreed to purchase two 2020-built Newcastlemax ships for $145.5 million. With those two ships the fleet is 45 vessels: two Newcastlemax, 17 Capesize, 15 Ultramax and 11 Supramax. Together they carry about 5.04 million deadweight tons, and their average age is 12.7 years. Customers include Rio Tinto, Vale, BHP, Trafigura and Oldendorff Carriers. Oldendorff was the largest in 2025, at 11.0% of voyage revenue. Genco has no pricing power of its own. Its income is set by charter rates, which swing widely, so we value it across a full shipping cycle rather than on any one year. How we measured earnings. We start with cash from operations. We remove working-capital swings and subtract stock compensation as a real cost. Drydocking, the required periodic overhaul of each ship, is paid in cash and stays in as a cost; it was $55.8 million in 2025. Genco renews its fleet by disposing of older ships and acquiring younger ones, so we count the cost of ships as purchases minus sale proceeds. From 2016 to 2025 it spent about $732 million on ships, scrubbers, ballast-water systems and other equipment, and took in about $310 million from ship sales. Over roughly the same period, fleet capacity went from 4.74 million tons in early 2017 to 5.04 million tons today. On this basis, owner earnings per share for 2017 through 2025 were $0.88, -$2.28, $0.32, $1.10, $4.47, $3.26, -$0.16, $2.68 and -$1.69. We use the median, $0.88, as the mid-cycle level. We leave out 2016. It came before the 2017 conversion of preferred stock that more than quadrupled the share count, and it fell in a slump when operating cash flow was negative in both 2015 and 2016. Large write-downs of ship values, about $209 million in 2020 alone, do not reduce these figures because no cash left the company. The real cash loss from disposing of older ships cheaply is already counted in the net ship spending. A second check points to the same level. Genco's ships cost about $1.31 billion in total, and vessel depreciation was roughly $50 million in 2025. That is about what it must spend each year to stop a fleet averaging 12 to 13 years old from getting older. Charging $50 million a year against each year's cash earnings gives a median of about $0.87 per share. Over 2017 to 2025, net income excluding write-downs and gains on ship sales averaged about $40 million a year, which matches the roughly $41 million a year of owner earnings. Where things stand. 2025 was a weak year. Operating cash flow fell to $31.9 million and owner earnings were -$1.69 a share. The first half of 2026 was much stronger. Revenue was $250.8 million against $152.2 million a year earlier, operating cash flow was $48.9 million against $8.3 million, and both quarters were profitable. Debt rose to pay for the Newcastlemax ships. It was $330 million at June 30, 2026, up from $90 million at the end of 2024, against $73.6 million of cash. Base case, $11.46 per share. Owner earnings are about $1.20 a share in 2026, carried by the strong first half, and $0.95 in 2027 as rates settle. After that they hold at the $0.88 mid-cycle level. For now the two Newcastlemax ships roughly break even once we count interest on the debt that paid for them and the cost of replacing them in time, so we add nothing for them. Earnings stay flat through year 20 and fade to zero by year 30. They last that long because the cost of replacing ships is already deducted, and Genco has run this model through several cycles. We stop at 30 years because the same record includes a Chapter 11 restructuring completed on July 9, 2014. Bear case, $1.62 per share. The second half of 2026 falls back to 2025 levels, leaving about $0.30 for the year. Then come four years like Genco's weak years of 2019, 2020, 2023 and 2025, made worse by the higher debt, at about -$0.35 a share each. Earnings recover only to $0.60, and the case ends after year 15. What supports it: operating cash flow was negative in 2015 and 2016, and the company restructured in 2014 after a long, debt-heavy slump. Costs could also rise. The US Maritime Action Plan of February 13, 2026 calls for a fee on foreign-built ships calling at US ports, and the separate US and Chinese port fees are suspended for only one year. Bull case, $17.36 per share. The second half of 2026 keeps pace with the second quarter, giving $1.65 for the year. 2027 is strong at $2.50, the kind of year seen in 2021 and 2022, when owner earnings were $4.47 and $3.26. After that, earnings run at the cycle's average rather than its median, plus a contribution from the Newcastlemax ships as their debt is paid down, for about $1.15 a year over 25 years, fading over the following ten. What could make this wrong. Nearly all of the value depends on the mid-cycle level. From 2017 to 2025, total net income was only about $28 million on nearly $900 million of shareholders' equity. Almost all the profit came in 2021 and 2022. If boom years like those do not come back, the base case is too high. It is also too high if replacing ships costs more than about $50 million a year. The margin-of-safety price of $5.50 is about half the base case. That discount reflects cyclical earnings, a bear case not far above zero, and the 2014 restructuring.

Sales geography
Worldwide: international seaborne dry bulk trade. The company says a geographic revenue breakdown is impracticable because its ships trade over hundreds of routes between countries in international waters.
