Greenlight Re is a property and casualty reinsurer. It writes about $770 million a year of premiums through its Cayman Islands, Ireland and London platforms, covering risks in the U.S., Europe, the Middle East and Asia. It has a second, very different asset: a $493 million stake in Solasglas, an investment fund run by David Einhorn's firm (Einhorn chairs Greenlight Re's board). That stake is about 70% of shareholders' equity. The company can redeem it on three business days' notice. We value the two pieces separately, because they earn money in different ways. The reinsurance business. We measure what the business actually earns in cash for owners. That is operating cash flow, less the swings from reserves and premiums receivable, less stock compensation. This gives $1.58, $0.32 and $1.45 per share for 2023, 2024 and 2025. Growth in insurance reserves is excluded because it is money owed to claimants, not profit. We leave out the fund's gains because they are not received in cash. They stay inside the fund and are counted through its value instead. Earlier years came out negative on this measure. Reported profits then were mostly fund gains that never arrived as cash, and the business was smaller. The 2023-2025 median of $1.45 overstates today's earning power. Management has moved cash into the fund, so interest income fell from $46.0 million in 2024 to $24.5 million in 2025. It was only $10.8 million in the first half of 2026. On our measure, first-half 2026 earnings from the reinsurance business were about $2.4 million, against $15.9 million a year earlier. The second quarter was hit by catastrophe losses and added reserves for Middle East exposure. The combined ratio was 100.1%, and management describes the market as softening. We therefore start the base case at roughly $0.75 per share a year, which is the median less the interest income no longer being earned. Last year's actual growth was not a guide: premiums earned fell 4% in the first half of 2026, so no growth is credited. Base case, about $21.95 per share. The reinsurance business earns $0.75 a year for ten years and then fades to zero over another ten. We know the business renews treaties annually and has done so for about twenty years. Nothing signed or already under way supports a longer life, so we do not assume one. That is worth about $7.05 per share. The Solasglas stake is counted at its reported value, about $14.90 per share, with no credit for future returns. The fund lost heavily in 2018, so its gains of $29-55 million a year in 2022-2025 are not proven to repeat. Bear case, about $11.82. Underwriting stays near the weak first half of 2026, at $0.25 a year for five years and then fading away. The Solasglas stake falls 30%, which is a loss of the kind the fund suffered in 2018. Because the fund is so much of the equity, this is the biggest risk to the shares. Debt is small, at about $9 million. Bull case, about $26.18. The business returns to $1.20 a year, close to the 2023 and 2025 levels, for ten years and then fades. The fund is held at book value. We credit no fund returns and no market growth. What would make this wrong: a Solasglas loss deeper than 30%; larger Middle East or catastrophe losses; or a faster fall in reinsurance pricing. On the other side, the fund could keep compounding, as it did in 2022-2025. The margin-of-safety price is about $12.50 a share. That is below the fund stake's own value per share, so the price assigns no value to the reinsurance business and leaves room for fund losses.
