Dolby Laboratories earns most of its money by licensing technology rather than selling hardware. In fiscal 2025 (year ended September 26, 2025) licensing brought in $1,248 million of $1,349 million total revenue, with a licensing gross margin of 93%. The licensing comes from two sources. The first is branded technologies such as Dolby Atmos, Dolby Vision and the Dolby Digital Plus and AC-4 audio codecs, built into TVs, phones, PCs, cars and streaming content. The second is patent royalties on industry standards (AAC and HE-AAC audio, AVC and HEVC video), collected mostly through patent pools such as Via LA and Access Advance. The rest comes from cinema equipment and services, including Dolby Cinema. How we measured earnings. We start from operating cash flow and remove short-term swings in working capital. We then subtract stock-based compensation as a real cost; it runs about $129 million a year, close to 10% of revenue. Finally we subtract the capital spending needed to stay in business. We count purchases of patents as part of that spending, because buying patents keeps the licensing portfolio stocked, much as equipment spending keeps a factory running. On this basis Dolby earned $3.19 per share in fiscal 2025, $2.90 in 2024, $2.60 in 2023, $1.82 in 2022, $2.94 in 2021, $2.65 in 2020 and $2.35 in 2019. We use the middle of those seven years, $2.65 per share, as our starting point. The period covers weak years (2020 and 2022) and strong ones. It is also measured on the current revenue-accounting basis. We did not start from fiscal 2025 because Dolby says part of that year's gain came from the timing of minimum-volume payments from licensees. Recent results also point lower: for the nine months to June 2026, revenue was flat at $1,047 million, operating income fell to $209 million from $235 million, and operating cash flow fell to $315 million from $349 million. So our first forecast year assumes no growth from $2.65. Fiscal 2025 grew about 10%. Acquired patents. In August 2024 Dolby bought GE Licensing for $434 million. Most of the value was HEVC video patents, which Dolby writes off over about 11 years. That write-off is an accounting charge, not a cash cost, so it does not reduce our earnings figure. But these patents do run out. Because our $2.65 starting point comes almost entirely from years before the purchase, we neither add the acquired royalties on top nor subtract their decline. We treat the two as offsetting. Base case, $47.03 per share. Earnings start at $2.65 and grow 2.5% a year for ten years, to about $3.31. That matches revenue growth of roughly 3% a year from fiscal 2014 ($960 million) to fiscal 2025 ($1,349 million). Over that decade Dolby's older patents kept expiring. Dolby holds about 28,400 issued patents expiring between 2025 and 2047 and spends about $262 million a year on research. Its record of replacing expiring royalties with newer formats such as Atmos and Vision is what carries the story past year ten. We hold earnings flat for another thirty years, with no growth assumed, then stop. Bear case, $24.17 per share. China was 26% of fiscal 2025 revenue, up from 22%, measured by where licensees are headquartered. Dolby's filings flag tariffs, trade barriers and geopolitical risk. Consumer-electronics licensing already fell 9% in fiscal 2025 on lower unit sales. In this case Dolby loses about a sixth of its China revenue, which cuts earnings to $2.20 a share. Earnings then slip 1% a year as audio and video patent programs expire faster than Atmos and Vision replace them. After year ten, earnings fall 5% a year for twenty years and then stop. The filings we reviewed show no long-term borrowings and $702 million of cash, so debt adds nothing to this downside. Bull case, $60.80 per share. Earnings start at $2.90. That is above our $2.65 starting point, to credit a full year of GE Licensing's programs, but below fiscal 2025's $3.19, which was helped by the timing of licensee payments. They grow 5% a year, matching the 2019-2025 growth rate in per-share earnings. The named drivers are the new Access Advance Video Distribution Program, which has signed 33 patent owners and five licensees including ByteDance and Tencent and which Dolby expects to produce revenue from fiscal 2026, and wider use of Atmos and Vision in cars and phones. After year ten, earnings hold flat for thirty years. What could make this wrong: a sharp loss of Chinese licensees; a failure to replace expiring standards royalties; or patent purchases staying as high as the $42 million spent in the first nine months of fiscal 2026. Patent purchases have averaged under $20 million a year. We could not see from the filings what that recent purchase was, or how much yearly revenue GE Licensing adds, because Dolby says it cannot provide pro forma figures. The margin-of-safety price is around $31 per share, a sensible margin of safety for a very profitable business that has little need for capital but depends on patents and on Chinese licensees.
