Margin of safety$0.00 ComplexityAverage Updated
Business condition attached to the margin of safety Positive owner earnings after counting stock compensation as a cost, sustained for at least several years.
1stdibs runs an online marketplace where dealers, galleries and designers sell luxury furniture, art, jewelry and other design items. It earns commissions and seller fees rather than owning the goods. Revenue was $89.6 million in 2025, up from $84.7 million in 2023 and $102.7 million in 2021. Total sales value on the platform has been flat for three years ($362.3 million in 2023, $362.3 million in 2024, $363.9 million in 2025), and about 81% of revenue comes from U.S. buyers. What we measure. We value a business by the cash its operations produce for owners after every real cost. That means operating cash flow, with timing swings in payables and receivables removed, minus stock-based compensation (a real cost paid in shares rather than cash) and the capital spending needed to keep the platform running. On that basis the company has produced negative owner earnings in each of the last five years: about $(0.70), $(0.79), $(0.63), $(0.45) and $(0.37) per share for 2021 through 2025. Operating cash flow itself was negative every year, $(2.4) million in 2025. Stock compensation of $14.1 million in 2025 is larger than the whole revenue-to-cash-flow gap, so the losses look small in cash terms only because much of the cost is paid in shares. Reported cash flow also includes about $5.4 million of interest income on the company's cash pile, so the operating business burns more than the headline figure suggests. Direction. Losses have narrowed each year since 2022, and the first half of 2026 was better than the first half of 2025 (operating cash flow of $(3.7) million versus $(5.2) million, stock compensation of $6.0 million versus $7.6 million, revenue $45.7 million versus $44.7 million). That is a real improvement, but owner earnings are still negative and no signed contract, backlog or multi-year record shows the business turning positive. Flat sales value and a falling number of active buyers (60,771 in 2025 versus 64,306 in 2024) do not supply a named driver for growth either. The cases. Bear, base and bull are all valued at $0 per share. Under our method a case is worth only what named, evidenced earning power supports, and this company currently has none once stock compensation is counted. The bear case is that losses continue and the company keeps spending its cash. The base case is that it stays near break-even before stock compensation but never earns a surplus for owners. The bull case is that cost cuts continue, but even at the pace of the last three years, owner earnings would not clearly turn positive on anything we can point to, so we do not credit it. We did not add the company's cash and short-term investments ($95.0 million at the end of 2025, with an accumulated deficit of $346.0 million) on top of the earnings-based value, because our approach values the ongoing earning stream only. Readers who weigh that cash separately should note it has been shrinking through buybacks and operating burn. What would make this wrong. If sales value grows meaningfully while costs stay flat, or stock compensation falls sharply while cash flow turns positive for several years running, the business could earn real owner earnings and the value would be well above zero. Because there is no earnings-based value today, no margin-of-safety price is set, and the estimate would be revisited only after sustained positive owner earnings.
