Business condition attached to the margin of safety Owner earnings (operating cash flow before inventory and other working-capital swings, less stock compensation and maintenance capital spending) turn durably positive, shown by at least two consecutive years of positive results, and the term loan due June 2028 is refinanced or largely repaid.
Camping World is a national RV retailer that operated 196 RV dealerships and service centers at the end of 2025. It earns money four ways: selling new RVs (43% of 2025 revenue), selling used RVs (31%), parts, service and accessories (12%), and financing and insurance sold alongside vehicles (10%). It also runs Good Sam, a membership and protection-plan business (services and plans were about 3% of revenue). In 2025 revenue was $6.37 billion and gross profit was $1.88 billion. The problem is what is left after the costs of running and funding that network. In 2025 income from operations was $180 million, but interest took $199 million ($77 million on inventory financing and $122 million on other debt). The company carries about $1.47 billion of long-term debt, of which roughly $1.29 billion is a term loan that matures in June 2028. How we measure earnings: we start from cash generated by operations, remove the swings in inventory, receivables, payables and deferred revenue (in 2025 inventory grew by $223 million, funded by $445 million of net inventory-financing borrowing), subtract stock-based compensation as a real cost, and subtract the capital spending needed to keep the stores running. Real property purchases are netted against real property sales, because the company routinely buys and resells properties. Acquisitions of dealerships are not counted as maintenance. Per-share figures use Class A shares plus the Class B shares that go with exchangeable ownership units in the operating company, because the earnings belong to both groups. On that basis, owner earnings per share were: 2016 $2.63, 2017 $2.85, 2018 -$0.01, 2019 -$0.28, 2020 $3.99, 2021 $5.66, 2022 $3.07, 2023 -$0.64, 2024 -$0.34 and 2025 -$0.50. The pandemic years 2020 and 2021 were far above anything before or since. Across 2018 to 2025 the median year has been roughly break-even. Owner earnings per share fell from -$0.34 in 2024 to -$0.50 in 2025, and the first half of 2026 gives no evidence of a turnaround: revenue was $3.29 billion, about 3% below the first half of 2025, and net income was $17 million against $33 million. Base case: we use the median of the 2018 to 2025 record, -$0.15 per share a year, and assume no growth in year 1, matching the trailing trend rather than assuming a reversal. No growth is credited. The company has bought dealerships nearly every year since 2016 (for example $81 million in 2025 and $72 million in 2024), but owner earnings in recent years were negative and did not cover it, so we do not treat it as free growth. We also do not credit a return to the strong years, because we cannot point to a signed contract or structural change that brings back pandemic-era demand. Over ten years this is worth about -$1.09 per share. Beyond year ten we credit nothing, since nothing we can name and evidence continues the earnings stream. A negative value means the ongoing cost of interest, stock compensation and store upkeep outweighs cash generated on this record; shareholders' actual exposure is limited to their investment. Bear case: owner earnings stay at the 2025 level of -$0.50 per share for ten years, consistent with 2023 through 2025, when all three years were negative, while about $1.29 billion of term loan comes due in June 2028. This is worth about -$3.66 per share. On this path the company would consume cash and depend on lenders; realistically shareholders would lose their investment well before that. Bull case: the company keeps the 2025 operating cash generation (cash from operations before working-capital swings of $109 million) and holds capital spending at the 2024 level ($42 million after netting property sales), which it demonstrated in 2024. Stock compensation stays at the 2025 level of $44 million. Owner earnings then reach about $0.22 per share a year, worth about $1.61 per share over ten years, again with nothing credited afterward. What would prove this wrong: a sustained fall in interest costs or a sustained rise in vehicle gross profit per unit (new vehicle gross profit per unit fell 15% in 2025 to $4,901) would lift owner earnings above these cases. Conversely, a failure to refinance the 2028 term loan on acceptable terms would push results toward the bear case. Judgements: stock compensation was subtracted in full; the pandemic-boom years were left out of the level we use; the company's accounting for lease payments (non-cash lease expense and lease liability payments) was left inside operating cash flow because the two largely offset. The 2016 to 2017 figures use the company's later restated filings. The pandemic-related deferral of payroll taxes in 2020 to 2022 was treated as a working-capital item.
