ClearSign Technologies Corp (CLIR) stock intrinsic value fair value estimate & owner earnings analysis

Margin of safety$0.00 ComplexityAverage Updated
Business condition attached to the margin of safety Sustained positive owner earnings, meaning operating cash flow from recurring product sales that covers stock compensation and capex, or a signed multi-year order book that clearly covers the roughly $5M annual cash burn.
ClearSign Technologies develops burner and sensing technology (ClearSign Core and ClearSign Eye) that lets industrial heaters and boilers, mainly in refining and petrochemicals, cut nitrogen-oxide emissions. It is a very small company with 15 employees and almost no revenue. It has lost $104.5 million since inception. Operating cash flow was negative every year from 2016 to 2025, at roughly $3 to $9 million a year. In 2025 it was about $(4.7) million, and about $(2.6) million in the first half of 2026. After adding back stock compensation, which is a real cost, the business consumed roughly $1.00 per current share in each of 2023, 2024 and 2025. The per-share figures are restated for the March 2026 one-for-ten reverse split. We have no year of positive owner earnings to anchor on. Cash was $9.2 million at the end of 2025, and management says it funds operations for more than twelve months. We treat that cash as roughly offset by the cash the business will spend over the next one to two years. We do not treat it as value on top. Every case rests only on drivers that are already secured or proven. Commercial adoption of the technology, further orders from Birwelco (a single customer that made up two-thirds of 2025 sales), and any path to profit are hopes rather than contracted or repeatable results, so none is credited. Bear case: cash runs out before revenue covers costs, and shares are worth nothing after dilution. Base case: the business keeps spending roughly what it earns from cash on hand and ends near zero. Bull case: no named and evidenced lever yet supports a positive value, so it is also $0. Any upside would come from customer orders that have not yet been placed. The shares were also close to a Nasdaq listing problem, and the company regained compliance on March 30, 2026 after the reverse split. No value is assigned until there are recurring, growing sales that at least cover cash costs. The main risk to this view is a large commercial order or licensing deal that turns the technology into a profit-making business. Such an outcome would show up in the filings as backlog or multi-year contracts.
