Clean Harbors runs North America's largest network of permitted hazardous-waste incinerators, landfills and treatment plants, plus field services, industrial cleaning (HydroChemPSC), emergency response, and Safety-Kleen, which collects used motor oil and re-refines it into base oil and lubricants. The disposal network is the heart of the business: new hazardous-waste incineration permits are almost never granted, so the company has been able to raise prices year after year and fill the new Kimball, Nebraska incinerator that came online in 2025. Earning power. We measure what the owners can take out each year: operating cash flow, less working-capital swings, stock compensation and the capital spending needed just to keep the asset base intact (spending tied to revenue growth is treated as investment, not cost). On that basis owner earnings were $8.42 a share in 2025, up 6.6% from $7.90 in 2024, after $6.47 in 2023, $9.80 in 2022 (boosted by a peak in re-refining spreads) and $5.80 in 2021. We value the business before its lenders by adding back about $2.90 a share of cash interest, and anchor on the median of 2021-2025, about $10.72 a share of pre-interest cash flow. We start in 2021 because the $1.25 billion HydroChemPSC acquisition that year changed the size and mix of the company; earlier years describe a smaller business. Amortization of acquired intangibles (about $54 million a year) is added back, as it reflects past purchase prices rather than ongoing cost; because those customer relationships do wear out, we credit only modest growth below. Our independent cross-check (net income plus depreciation, less maintenance spending) lands within about 5% of the cash-flow figure in 2025. What it owes. About $2.79 billion of term loan and senior notes (4.875% due July 2027, 5.125% due 2029, 6.375% due 2031 and 2033) plus $229 million of finance leases, less roughly $520 million of cash and marketable securities beyond operating needs, for net debt of about $2.5 billion, or $47 a share. The notes carry coupons close to long-run borrowing costs and are well covered, so we make no adjustment for the cost of the debt. The $130 million Depot Connect purchase announced in February 2026 was paid in cash in the first quarter and is already reflected. Base case. Pre-interest cash flow grows 3% a year for three years and 2.5% thereafter, reaching about $13.90 a share in year 10, and holds there afterwards because the permitted disposal network is a durable, regulated franchise that keeps operating. The growth credited is only what the business has proven it can repeat: annual disposal price increases it has achieved through the last decade, plus small tuck-in acquisitions funded from its own cash. This is below the 6.6% growth actually achieved in 2025; we do not credit further large acquisitions, new PFAS-destruction volumes or re-refining margin recovery. The business is worth about $220 a share; less $47 of net debt, about $173 a share. Bear case. Within ten years we assume a repeat of the 2015-2016 oil-price collapse, which is this company's own documented downturn: in 2016 revenue fell 16% to $2.76 billion, the company lost money, and pre-interest cash flow per share fell to about half of its 2018-2019 level as industrial and energy customers cut back and the used-oil re-refining spread collapsed. Here cash flow drops from about $9.50 to $5.90 a share for two years, then takes four more years to recover, settling near $9.60 - below today's level, reflecting decay in the acquired customer base. Even at the trough the business earns about twice its $157 million annual interest bill, so the debt stays serviceable and the 2027 notes can be refinanced. Business worth about $148 a share, less $47 of debt, about $101 a share. Bull case. The company's own levers execute: Kimball fills, pricing keeps outpacing cost inflation as it has since 2021, and tuck-in buying continues at the recent pace, giving 6% growth for five years and 4% for the next five, then 2% for ten more years as the network's scarcity keeps pricing ahead of inflation. Business worth about $294 a share, about $247 after debt. Margin-of-safety price. We are reasonably confident of the earnings level: five years since HydroChemPSC show cash flow rising steadily except for the 2022 spike, and the disposal network's pricing has proven sticky. The worst plausible event is a deep industrial recession coinciding with an oil collapse and a large environmental liability or incinerator outage; the hard, permitted assets, the absence of customer concentration and interest covered about twice even at a 2016-style trough mean the company would survive it, though the shares could be worth around $100 in that world. The things we are most likely wrong about are the re-refining spread, the durability of acquired field-service relationships, and management's habit of large debt-funded acquisitions; if all three proved wrong the value would sit near the bear case. At $90 a share, the business's owner earnings of about $8.40 a share represent roughly a 9% cash yield on that price, it is below what the shares appear to be worth even after a full oil-and-industrial downturn, and a move toward the base-case value over three to four years plus that cash yield implies well over 20% a year. Above that price, a 20% return would depend on the base case arriving quickly. Earlier published figures for this company were built on a different basis and are not comparable with these.

Sales geography
United States (Northeast, Midwest, West, South; notable Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast industrial base), Canada (Alberta, Ontario, Quebec), minor Puerto Rico
Historical growth strategy
Builds on a network of permitted hazardous-waste incinerators, landfills and treatment sites that is very hard to replicate, raising disposal prices and adding capacity (the Kimball, Nebraska incinerator) while buying field-service and waste-collection businesses to feed volume into the network - large deals such as Safety-Kleen (2012) and HydroChemPSC (2021) plus a steady run of smaller tuck-ins (Thompson Industrial, HEPACO, Depot Connect). The Safety-Kleen re-refining arm adds exposure to used-oil and base-oil spreads.
Chart analysis
A chartist would describe a long-term secular uptrend: the stock compounded from the depressed 2015-2016 lows through a strong 2021-2024 advance to all-time highs, with higher highs and higher lows on the multi-year chart. More recent action has been a sideways-to-choppy consolidation below those highs, with the 200-day moving average flattening; a technician would treat a clean break above the prior peak as resumption of the primary uptrend and a decisive loss of the consolidation lows as a sign the long uptrend is maturing.
