Avient is a specialty materials formulator - it blends colorants, additives, engineered polymers and specialty fibers into custom formulations sold across a wide range of end markets: packaging, healthcare, transportation, telecommunications, defense, building and construction, and consumer goods. The company operates two segments - Color, Additives and Inks (the larger, steadier segment) and Specialty Engineered Materials (smaller, more differentiated, and currently the faster-growing of the two) - and runs 98 manufacturing sites worldwide, with about 61% of 2025 sales coming from outside the United States. The last major reshaping of the business happened in 2022, when Avient sold its lower-margin Distribution business and, together with new debt, used the proceeds to acquire DSM's Protective Materials business (high-performance fibers used in defense and marine applications). That transaction, plus the 2020 acquisition of Clariant's color and additives business, means the company reported today is meaningfully different from the one it was five or six years ago. Because of that, this valuation is anchored on 2023-2025 - the three full years since the portfolio settled into its current shape - rather than the whole ten-year history. Owner earnings (cash the business generates after real maintenance investment, with non-cash charges like depreciation, amortization and one-time impairments and stock-based compensation stripped out) came to roughly $0.92 per share in 2023 (a soft year, as the specialty-plastics industry worked through post-pandemic inventory destocking), $2.26 in 2024, and $2.07 in 2025. The 2025 figure was held down by a $71.6 million non-cash write-off of an enterprise software project the company decided to abandon, plus related one-time contractual and restructuring costs - real cash costs in the year incurred, but not representative of a normal year. The median of the three years, about $2.07 per share, is the starting point for this valuation. Because the 2025 decline traces to that dated, one-time write-off rather than a decline in the underlying business, and because the first half of 2026 already shows sales and earnings recovering, the first year of the base case assumes a partial return toward a normal cost structure rather than a continuation of the 2025 dip. Base case: the two segments continue on the path already visible in the last two years' results. Color, Additives and Inks - facing softer demand in consumer, construction, industrial and transportation markets - grows slowly if at all, while Specialty Engineered Materials keeps benefiting from healthcare, defense and telecommunications demand, a trend management has called out in back-to-back years. Owner earnings grow at a mid-single-digit pace through the ten-year forecast, helped by completion of cost-restructuring programs already underway. Beyond year ten, growth settles to a modest rate in line with the company's long, consistent record of reinvesting in product development (it has spent $90-99 million a year on R&D over the past three years), rather than assuming any new, unnamed catalyst. This produces a present value of about $74 per share. Bear case: the current soft patch in Color, Additives and Inks' end markets does not resolve, new tariffs on imported and exported materials (a risk the company has specifically flagged given its global manufacturing footprint) compress margins, and the healthcare/defense/telecommunications growth proves more modest than the last two years suggest. Owner earnings run essentially flat to slightly declining over the decade. The company carries meaningful debt (about $1.9 billion against roughly $2.4 billion of equity) taken on for past acquisitions, leaving less room for error if performance stays soft. This produces a value of about $33 per share. Bull case: the healthcare/defense/telecommunications growth already visible in the last two years continues at a similar or slightly better pace, the restructuring programs underway fully pay off in margin, and the soft end markets in the larger segment stabilize rather than keep shrinking - extensions of trends already showing up in the filings, not a hoped-for turn in the broader economy. This produces a value of about $98 per share. One accounting judgment worth flagging: Avient's history includes large one-time, non-cash items tied to acquisitions and divestitures - a $550 million gain on the 2022 sale of its Distribution business, and non-cash purchase-accounting charges (inventory step-up amortization) tied to the DSM Protective Materials and Clariant acquisitions. These are added back in the owner-earnings math, since they are not repeating cash costs of the ongoing business, but the working-capital and cash-tax movements that came with those same transactions - including a $104 million tax payment on the 2022 gain that landed in 2023 - are treated as timing items and excluded either way. That is why 2023's reported owner earnings look low without actually reflecting cash leaving the core, ongoing business. Given the spread between the bear and base cases, and the risk that the current soft patch in the larger segment persists longer than expected, the margin-of-safety price is around $30 per share - close to the bear-case value.

OE = NI + D&A + other explicit non-cash reconciling items (gain/loss on sale of business, accelerated depreciation, deferred tax, debt extinguishment costs) - maintenance capex; SBC and all working-capital-section items (AR/Inv/AP, pension, accrued/other) cancel out of the CFO identity and are excluded, per project methodology.
