Business condition attached to the margin of safety Owner earnings positive on a sustained basis (cash from operations after interest exceeding stock compensation), with a credible path to refinance or repay the roughly $158 million of debt due April 2030.
Altisource Portfolio Solutions provides outsourced services and software to the U.S. mortgage and real estate industry: property inspection and preservation, foreclosure trustee services, the Hubzu online auction platform, renovation services (launched 2024), the Equator REO software, and, through the Lenders One cooperative, loan-origination services. Its business was once far larger (revenue about $1.05 billion in 2015) but shrank to roughly $145 million in 2023 as foreclosures fell and its former anchor customer, now Onity, moved work elsewhere. Revenue has since grown modestly, to $160 million in 2024 and $171 million in 2025. What the business earns for owners. We measure owner earnings as operating cash flow, after interest, less swings in working capital and less stock-based pay. On that basis the company earned real money through 2019 (roughly $27 to $48 per share on today's share count, adjusted for the May 2025 one-for-eight share consolidation) but has been negative every year since 2020: about -$5.69, -$26.25, -$18.11, -$4.81, -$5.11 and -$0.29 per share for 2020 through 2025. The company is much smaller and differently structured than before 2020, so we treat 2023 onward as the relevant period. Operating cash flow was -$5.1 million in 2025 and -$5.0 million in 2024, and cash interest alone is roughly $12 million a year on a debt load that is about $159 million (main facility, maturing mostly April 2030) plus $12 million of super-senior debt (February 2029). Cash was about $30 million at year-end 2025. Growth reconciliation. Owner earnings improved from -$5.11 to -$0.29 per share in 2025, but most of that change came from working capital and non-cash interest timing, and the 2025 figure remains negative. We assume no improvement in year one beyond that level. Base case: owner earnings stay near the 2025 level (about -$3 million a year) until the main debt falls due in 2030. We give no credit to revenue growth, market share gains, the renovation launch or a recovery in foreclosures: revenue has grown for only two years, is not contracted, and the business has never yet turned that growth into positive cash flow. With no named and evidenced source of positive cash generation, the equity is worth roughly nothing on this basis, and the small continuing burn puts our estimate at about -$1 per share. Bear case: cash burn returns toward the 2023-2024 level of about -$5 per share a year, the $30 million of cash runs down, and the $158 million due in 2030 cannot be refinanced; the company would appear to owe more than the business is worth, by roughly $8 per share on our estimate. Bull case: the business's own recent levers hold (revenue growth since 2023, the lower interest cost after the February 2025 debt exchange, cost savings), owner earnings reach about break-even, and the existing cash is preserved, worth roughly $3 per share. Risks and what could make this estimate wrong. Onity alone was 42% of 2025 revenue (54% of the Servicer and Real Estate segment), and loss or reduction of that work would hurt sharply; the company's own risk factors note that a failure to refinance debt could lead to a going-concern uncertainty, though the auditor has not issued such a warning. Upside we could be missing: a sharp rise in foreclosure volumes would lift revenue on a fixed cost base, but that is a market condition rather than something the company controls, so we do not include it. Additional shares and warrants issued in the 2025 debt exchange add some dilution not reflected in these per-share figures. Some working-capital lines (notably a $15.9 million outflow in other liabilities in 2025) were not fully explained from the filings and are excluded from owner earnings as working-capital timing.
