Business condition attached to the margin of safety Owner earnings show recovery from the first half of 2026 (net loss and negative operating cash flow), and the credit facility maturities in October 2026 and October 2027 are refinanced or extended.
AdvanSix makes chemicals at five US plants, in Frankford, Pennsylvania; Hopewell, Chesterfield and Portsmouth, Virginia; and Bucks, Alabama. In 2025 it sold $1.52 billion of product. Plant nutrients (Sulf-N ammonium sulfate fertilizer, a co-product of caprolactam) were 37% of sales at $564 million, chemical intermediates (acetone, phenol, cyclohexanone and others) 25% at $377 million, Nylon 6 resin 20% at $310 million, and caprolactam, the nylon building block, 18% at $271 million. About 86% of sales are in the United States and 14% abroad, mostly Latin America and Canada. These are commodity products whose prices swing with the cycle, and the company spends heavily to keep its plants running. How we measured earnings. We take cash from operations, remove the swings in receivables, inventory, payables and customer advances, subtract stock compensation, and subtract the capital spending needed to keep the plants going. Over the last ten years (2016 to 2025) this "owner earnings" figure per share was: $0.12, $3.96, $0.85, -$0.94, $1.52, $6.63, $6.49, $0.30, -$0.73 and $0.78. The results are very uneven: two boom periods (2017 and 2021-22) sit among several years of near zero or negative results. Because the business is cyclical, we use the median of all ten years, about $0.82 per share, so that both booms and slumps count. Spending on new capacity was subtracted in full in years when sales were falling, which lowers the earnings figure in those years. The 2025 figure of $0.78 compares with -$0.73 in 2024; we assume no growth from the $0.82 level in the first year, so we do not assume a faster pace than the most recent year. Base case, $13.50 per share. Earnings stay at about $0.82 per share indefinitely, discounted at 6%. We credit no growth. The company is converting more of its ammonium sulfate into a higher-value granular form (a target of about 75% by the end of 2026 under its SUSTAIN program) and expects to spend less on capital projects in 2026, but the filings give no dollar figure for what the granular conversion will add to earnings, so we left it out. Sales growth over the past decade has not been steady enough to credit either. Bear case, $1.90 per share. Conditions of the last three years continue: owner earnings of about $0.12 per share, the average of 2023 to 2025 (a year of $0.30, then -$0.73, then $0.78). Reasons this is credible: the company lost $12.3 million in the first six months of 2026 and operating cash flow was negative $5.3 million, against positive $32.6 million a year earlier. It also relies on a $500 million revolving credit line, with $215 million borrowed at the end of 2025. As described in its 2025 annual report, $48 million of the line matures in October 2026 and the remaining $452 million in October 2027. In addition, US anti-dumping duties on Chinese ammonium sulfate, which protect the largest product line, come up for their scheduled review in 2028. We did not assume the duties end, only that earnings stay weak. Bull case, $32 per share. The company's own 2026 capital spending guidance is $75 to $95 million, versus $116 million in 2025. At the midpoint of $85 million, that is about $31 million a year less spending, or roughly $1.15 per share, added to the $0.82 base, giving about $1.96 per share of owner earnings held indefinitely. This assumes the lower spending is sustainable and does not simply defer maintenance. We did not include a recovery in chemical prices, because that cannot be shown from the company's own filings. What could make this wrong. If the reduced spending proves to be a delay in necessary maintenance, earnings would fall back toward the bear case. If the granular fertilizer program lifts profits, or chemical margins recover, value would be higher than the base case. The company paid a $0.16 quarterly dividend through early 2026, and its first-half 2026 results did not generate the cash to cover it. Note that the first-quarter 2026 loss was $15.5 million and the second quarter was a small profit of $3.2 million, so the trend is mixed rather than uniformly worse. Debt is not subtracted separately because interest is already paid out of the cash flow we start from.
