Business condition attached to the margin of safety Owner earnings after stock compensation positive on a sustained basis (roughly four consecutive quarters of operating cash flow, less stock-based compensation, less capital spending, above zero) while revenue growth holds near its current high single digits.
Asana sells subscription work-management software (project and task tracking, plus its AI Studio tools) to teams and enterprises, with a fiscal year ending January 31. Revenue was $790.8 million in fiscal 2026, up 9.2% from $723.9 million, and $421.5 million in the first half of fiscal 2027, up about 10% from the prior year. Remaining contracted revenue was $524.8 million at January 31, 2026, about 78% of which is expected to be recognised within twelve months. The central issue is that Asana pays its staff largely in stock. We treat that as a real cost. After subtracting stock compensation ($214.8 million in fiscal 2026), removing the cash boost from customers paying subscriptions upfront, and deducting the capital spending needed to stay in business (including capitalised software), the business consumed about $99 million in fiscal 2026, or $0.42 per share. That is much better than the $197 million lost in fiscal 2025, $204 million in fiscal 2024 and $362 million in fiscal 2023, but it is still a loss every year in the record. We therefore have no positive earnings level to build on, and we do not treat the reported operating cash flow ($90.4 million) as earnings, because it exists only because the stock compensation is added back. What we credit. Fiscal 2026 owner earnings improved by about 50% (loss narrowed from $0.86 to $0.42 per share). Our base case assumes the loss narrows by about 55% in fiscal 2027, to roughly $45 million, slightly faster than last year. The dated reason is in the first half of fiscal 2027: operating cash flow was $86.3 million against $46.6 million a year earlier, and stock compensation fell to $92.6 million from $110.3 million, on the back of the 5% workforce reduction approved in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025. Two quarters of improvement are consistent with that path, though the second quarter was less strong than the first. Beyond that the base case has losses shrinking to about $20 million in fiscal 2028 and reaching break-even in fiscal 2029, after which the business is credited with nothing further. Base value is therefore essentially the company's balance sheet: $434.0 million of cash and marketable securities at January 31, 2026, less the $40.6 million term loan, less the present value of the remaining losses (about $60 million), roughly $333 million, or about $1.40 per share on 237 million diluted shares. What we left out. We do not credit revenue growth or margin expansion beyond break-even. Net revenue retention is 96% (97% for core customers), meaning existing customers spend slightly less each year and all growth must come from winning new customers, which is not a repeatable mechanism we can point to. Further stock-compensation cuts, AI product monetisation and any share gains are not assumed. The improvement in stock compensation and cash flow is real but three years is not long enough to treat as permanent; we credit it only to break-even. Bear case: about $0 per share. The fiscal 2026 loss rate of about $99 million persists, revenue growth fades (retention is already below 100%), and the company works through most of its balance sheet in roughly four years, leaving little for shareholders. The company does not appear to owe more than it is worth, since cash exceeds borrowings, but nothing in the operating business supports a value above the remaining cash. The company also carries lease commitments of $252.7 million, guaranteed by its founder, which continue regardless of results. Bull case: about $5.30 per share. Losses narrow to about $20 million in fiscal 2027, turn positive in fiscal 2028 and reach about $140 million a year by fiscal 2036, as roughly 10% revenue growth, an approximately 90% gross margin subscription base and the lower stock-compensation run rate all persist; those earnings are then credited for five more years and then dropped, because no named mechanism supports them longer. Adding the net cash gives about $1.25 billion. Margin-of-safety price. The margin-of-safety price is about $2.50 per share, and it applies only once the business condition above is met. Until owner earnings actually turn positive, the base value is little more than net cash and the bear case is roughly zero, so the margin of safety must be very large. Cash is also being used: $132.2 million was spent on buybacks in fiscal 2026 and a further $160 million was authorised on February 27, 2026, which lowers cash and share count together but does not change the per-share picture materially unless shares are repurchased at prices above value. What would make this wrong. Upside: if Asana holds its cost base flat in dollars while revenue keeps growing about 10%, owner earnings could turn positive faster than we assume. Downside: fiscal 2026 included $30.7 million of asset impairments (lease-related) and repeated workforce reductions, and the cost cuts could reverse if the company reinvests in growth. We were unable to obtain the quarterly stock-compensation detail behind the second-quarter increase in fiscal 2027 (first quarter about $36 million, second quarter about $56 million), so the recovery pace is less certain than the half-year totals suggest. Owner earnings for fiscal 2020 rely on a pre-listing share count and are a weaker data point.
