Aclaris Therapeutics, Inc. (ACRS) stock intrinsic value fair value estimate & owner earnings analysis

Margin of safety$0.00 ComplexityHigh Updated
Business condition attached to the margin of safety A product candidate approved or a signed partnership that pays cash to Aclaris, plus operating cash flow that is positive or clearly heading there.
Aclaris Therapeutics is a clinical-stage drug developer focused on immune and inflammatory diseases. It has no approved product of its own and no operating profit. Its small revenue comes from contract laboratory research done for outside clients ($7.8 million in 2025, down from $18.7 million in 2024). Its KINect discovery platform and pipeline (including bosakitug and ATI-052, licensed in 2024) are still in clinical development. Owner earnings, meaning operating cash flow after working-capital swings, stock compensation and capital spending, have been negative in every year we could measure. They ranged from about -$0.35 to -$2.57 per share between 2019 and 2025, and were about -$0.56 per share ($68 million in total) in 2025. The 2024 figure looks better only because it includes a one-time $26.5 million payment from selling future OLUMIANT royalties. The one stream that once looked like a real asset is gone. In July 2024 Aclaris sold to OMERS its entire financial interest in the Eli Lilly OLUMIANT royalty and remaining milestones for alopecia areata. The income it still records from this is an accounting entry for cash already received, not new cash. All three cases are worth $0 per share. Bear: continued cash burn, with contingent payments tied to the Confluence acquisition ($11.0 million liability at year-end 2025) and the Biosion agreements, and no partner found. Base: the pipeline stays in development, spending continues, and nothing produces cash we can name and evidence today. Bull: a partner deal or approval would matter, but no signed deal or approval exists, so we credit nothing. We give no credit for hoped-for trial success, and we do not add the company's cash: it had $151.4 million in cash and securities at December 31, 2025, but this valuation counts only earnings the business generates, and the company is spending that cash to fund losses of roughly $50 to $70 million a year. Management states the cash funds operations for more than 12 months, and no going-concern doubt is raised. What would make this wrong: a licensing deal with meaningful upfront cash, or clinical results that lead to an approved product, would create value we have not counted. Our estimate would be revisited at that point. The company's accumulated deficit is $967.8 million, and the shares have also been heavily diluted (weighted diluted shares rose from about 41 million in 2019 to about 123 million in 2025). Accounting note: owner earnings for the biotech years were built from the cash flow statement using the main working-capital lines reported (payables, accruals, receivables, prepaids); the 2024 and 2025 figures rely mainly on the payables line, so small differences are possible.
