Viking Therapeutics, Inc. (VKTX) stock intrinsic value fair value estimate & owner earnings analysis

Margin of safety$0.00 ComplexityHigh Updated
Business condition attached to the margin of safety An approved product with revenue and positive owner earnings (cash from operations after stock compensation) measurable in the company's filings.
Viking Therapeutics is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company. Its lead drug candidate, VK2735, is a dual GLP-1/GIP receptor agonist being developed for obesity in both a weekly injection and a daily tablet. The company has never generated any revenue, and its 10-K for 2025 says it does not expect any until a candidate is approved and sold. What the numbers show. Cash used in operations has grown every year: about $48 million in 2022, $73 million in 2023, $88 million in 2024 and $279 million in 2025. After also deducting stock-based compensation ($41 million in 2025) and stripping out working-capital timing (2025 was helped by roughly $44 million of higher payables and accruals, which we remove), our owner earnings were about negative $364 million in 2025, or negative $3.23 per share on about 112.7 million diluted shares. Every year from 2021 to 2025 was negative, and the loss per share has widened each year (from about $0.65 in 2021). No capital-expenditure figure was separately reported in the data we used, so we treated it as zero. That does not change the picture. What has been achieved. In 2025 the company reported positive top-line Phase 2 results for the oral form of VK2735, and in earlier Phase 2 work the injectable form produced up to 14.7% weight loss over 13 weeks. Two Phase 3 trials of the injectable, VANQUISH-1 and VANQUISH-2, are under way, with VANQUISH-1 fully enrolled in November 2025. In March 2025 it signed multi-year agreements with CordenPharma securing dedicated manufacturing capacity for VK2735. Why every case is worth zero. Our approach values only what can be named and evidenced today: contracted revenue, a demonstrated earnings record, or a proven repeating process. Viking has none of these. Trial results, a manufacturing agreement and a large cash balance are real, but none of them is an approval, a sale or a contract to sell, and an approval that has not happened cannot be counted. Cash and investments of $705.7 million at the end of 2025 are also not added to value. Owner earnings are already after interest income and the company is burning cash faster than it earns, so the balance is funding the losses, not a surplus on top of them. The company states that this cash should fund operations through at least the first quarter of 2027, so further financing is likely if development continues beyond that, which would dilute existing shareholders. Bear case: $0 per share. Phase 3 does not lead to an approval, or approval comes with a label or economics that cannot cover the cost of development, and the cash is spent before any revenue appears. Base case: $0 per share. No approved product, contract or earnings history exists to build a value on, so we credit nothing. Bull case: $0 per share. Even if VK2735 succeeds, the timing, price, market share and cost of selling it are all unknowns that the filings cannot support, and a launch that has not happened is not a driver we can evidence. This is a statement that we cannot measure value from the business as it exists today, not a forecast that the shares are worthless. A successful Phase 3 outcome and approval could make this an entirely different company, and the estimate would then be redone on measured results. On today's evidence, the value of the shares depends on clinical outcomes rather than on earning power that can be assessed. What would make this wrong: an approval and launch of VK2735, or a partnering deal with committed payments. Neither is in place in the filings we reviewed.
